HIV Senior Staff Nurse

Together with the interdisciplinary team, the post holder will provide the highest standard of Individualised and holistic person‑centred care for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS, and other related sexual health conditions using the NHIVNA competencies as the practice framework.

The post holder will provide leadership, management and support within the nursing team working closely with other related disciplines within and without the department to provide a seamless HIV service.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that patient care is evidence based and of a high standard and will deputise for the HIV Charge Nurse as required.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as an expert resource and as a role model in the delivery of care to people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Provide information, counselling and health advice to patients with HIV/AIDS.
  • Have a novice level of competencies relevant to sexual health nursing.
  • Ensure that all Trust and professional policies e.g. BHIVA guidelines and procedures are adhered to.
  • Ensure that all Health and Safety policies are adhered to within the ward/department.
  • Maintain an awareness and understanding of child protection issues, ensuring that young people are treated appropriately according to Trust/Departmental guidelines.
  • Competent in providing HAART treatment support clinics independently.
  • Maintain effective channels of communication with regards to client care and ensuring that client confidentiality is upheld at all times.
  • Keep up to date with current nursing research and participate in research initiatives as required.
  • Manage enquiries, concerns and complaints from patients and visitors in a courteous, timely and relevant manner, informing a senior member of staff when appropriate of action taken or when necessary referring an enquiry to a more appropriate member of staff.
  • Investigate any delegated complaints and provide written reports, including recommendations on required actions as appropriate.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

  • NMC 1st level Registered general Nurse with current revalidation.
  • ENB 998 and Specialist Clinical Course in HIV/GUM STIF NHIVNA competencies.
  • BSc or ability to operate at degree level.
  • Sexual health experience.

  • Ability to organise and manage day‑to‑day departmental activities and the activities of large multidisciplinary team within an outpatient setting.
  • Communication skills – able to relate and communicate effectively with patients and staff at all levels and from different professions.
  • Team building and working skills – able to lead a team to achieve results.
  • Problem solving skills – able to respond to unexpected issues and provide first line response and to identify appropriate sources of secondary support.
  • Effectively deliver HAART clinics in support of patients adherence to medication.
  • Ability to support professional development and create a learning environment.
  • Ability to act as a clinical leader in HIV/sexual health and to problem solve and prioritise.
  • Ability to empathise and work in a sensitive and non‑judgmental manner.
  • Ability to effectively participate in research and audit programmes.
  • Highly self‑motivated – possesses high internal work standards, sets themselves and helps others to set attainable goals; wants to do things better, to improve, to be more effective and efficient; measure progress against target.
  • Excellent time management and communication.

Experience

  • Demonstrable clinical expertise, related to HIV/GUM.
  • Extensive experience in HIV/GUM speciality.
  • A working knowledge around policy and guideline development.
  • A good understanding of multi‑agency working.
  • Significant experience in HIV in/out patient care.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues.
  • Awareness and understanding of current health issues and in particular to demonstrate a good understanding of the NHS Plan and recent initiatives.
  • Understanding of the issues pertaining to change management.
  • Understanding of the issues pertaining to clinical risk management.
  • Understanding of clinical governance / risk management.
  • A working knowledge of safeguarding guidance.
