Position

Interventional Radiology Nurse – Pay Band: 5 • Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week • Location: Radiology, Worcestershire Royal Hospital

Reports to: Interventional Radiology Unit Manager. Liaises with medical and radiographic staff, students, administration, clerical staff, other health care professionals, porters, patients and relatives.

Job Purpose

To provide specialist nursing care and support to patients and users of the Radiology service, primarily within interventional radiology (elective and emergency procedures), ensuring dignity and privacy, while maintaining high‑quality patient‑focused care through leadership, management, and coordination of staff and resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic, specialised nursing care in all areas of Interventional Radiology Nursing.
  • Support and inform family members and carers for elective and emergency procedures.
  • Liaise with referring doctors and ward staff to ensure pre‑procedural work is completed.
  • Prepare equipment for the safe care of patients during procedures.
  • Identify and act on potential hazards to patients and staff and prevent patient injury.
  • Identify potential complications of various drugs used during procedures, including contrast media.
  • Participate in planning of procedures and management of procedural lists.
  • Access, plan and implement care for conscious or conscious‑sedated patients.
  • Coordinate and document planned patient care during procedural phases.
  • Practice principles of asepsis and lead infection control.
  • Recognise early signs of complications and act accordingly.
  • Assist consultants and clinicians, including sterile procedure (scrub), circulating, and care of sedated/anesthetised patients.
  • Take responsibility for care, custody and administration of pharmaceuticals.
  • Assist with ordering supplies, maintenance and repair of equipment for budgetary control.
  • Utilise advanced nursing/clinical practices such as cannulation, intravenous pharmaceutical administration per departmental protocol.
  • Maintain safety and comfort of patients during waiting, examination and post‑examination stay.
  • Report compliments, complaints, incidents and injuries to line manager and complete incident forms.
  • Participate in the provision of a 24‑hour, 7‑day per week service.
  • Comply with Departmental Ionising Radiation rules, regulations and local rules.
  • Observe and act as a professional role model, complying with Nursing and Midwifery Council regulations.
  • Carry out complex nursing procedures requiring specialist expertise and act as a reference.
  • Maintain correct documentation and record keeping using appropriate information systems.
  • Maintain protocols and quality standards for work practices.
  • Participate in medical/clinical audit and collect information for departmental activities.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment and monitor breakdowns.
  • Participate and supervise training of others and contribute to staff training needs.
  • Attend compulsory training and ensure apparatus/equipment is working safely.
  • Frequently assist radiologists and clinicians during complex interventional procedures.
  • Assess patient mobility, identify correct manual handling techniques and frequently manoeuvre patients, escorting on trolleys or beds.
  • Frequently stand for long periods while wearing heavy lead rubber protective clothing.
  • Monitor performance of others daily, advise improvements.
  • Liaise with other disciplines and foster good inter‑personnel skills.
  • Ensure all Trust, Unit and Directorate policies relating to Health and Safety, COSHH, Security and Radiation regulations are understood and observed.
  • Ensure all apparatus and equipment is safe and satisfactory.

  • Limit actions to those which an individual feels competent to undertake; seek guidance if uncertain.
  • Comply with the code of conduct and professional registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

  • Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act, Manual Handling Operations Regulations and all relevant Trust Health and Safety Policies.
  • Recognise and manage risk situations, report incidents, near misses and hazards promptly.
  • Accept personal responsibility and accountability for infection prevention and control; attend compulsory updates.

Confidentiality & Records

  • Maintain confidentiality, security and integrity of all patient and organisational information.
  • Adhere to legal and Trust duties regarding records management, whether paper or electronic.
