About the Job
The Claims and Labelling Officer will support the effective development of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) Claims Framework, helping to drive demand for cotton produced under the BCI standard and strengthen BCI’s value offering through the use of credible sustainability claims.
The role plays a key part in building long‑term commitment and support for BCI’s mission from members, certified organisations, consumers and other relevant stakeholders. This role will collaborate closely with, and be matrix‑managed by, the Claims & Labelling Coordinator as well as the Claims Team Lead.
The Challenge
Looking ahead to 2030, we are targeting reducing GHG emissions from cotton production by half, big cuts in synthetic pesticide use, improving soil health across our network, improving farm income and supporting women’s empowerment among farmers and farm workers.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Support the Claims & Labelling Coordinator with the overall revision(s) and update process for the Claims Framework;
- Project manage the Claims public consultation processes to ensure requirements for claims and labelling remain relevant and effective which includes coordinating internal and external public consultations including retailer and brand member‑specific sessions;
- Perform research, analysis and, as appropriate, benchmarking against other standards or industry initiatives, and engage with the same as relevant on claims‑related topics;
- Communicate any changes to the Claims Framework and requirements to colleagues with‑in the organisation in a timely and effective manner, ensuring they have the relevant information to allow them to implement changes directly with members and certified organisations;
- Ensure the BCI Claims and consumer‑facing BCI Cotton Label webpages are kept up to date and provide relevant information in compliance with current and emerging consumer and green claims legislation.
Supporting the team with the smooth execution of projects relating to the development of BCI’s Claims offering
- Provide project management support, including planning, coordination, and delivery, managing timelines and stakeholders to meet deadlines and project deliverables;
- Conduct relevant policy research and benchmarking activities related to projects;
- Support the preparation of supporting materials including presentations, reports and conclusion papers.
Experience
The following skills, knowledge, and experience:
- University degree in relevant field: sustainability, business, environmental science, law or equivalent experience (1‑3 years).
- Demonstrated experience or strong interest in sustainability and voluntary sustainability standard systems.
- Proficient in both internal and external messaging in English, capable of drafting documents and communication pieces targeted at different audiences.
- Strong interest in Sustainability Claims and Marketing and understanding of market demands and data for claims to ensure a credible claims offering.
- Ability to grasp legal requirements and restrictions for sustainability claims both for retailers and brands (B2C) as well as supply chain organisations (B2B) so our Claims offering is accessible to supply chain stakeholders.
- Capable of coordinating complex projects and managing deadlines and competing priorities effectively to ensure timely delivery of projects.
- Ability to design pragmatic solutions while considering the big picture, reactive to working in BCI’s dynamic environment.
- Languages are an asset.
- Experience working in multicultural and international settings.

Working arrangements
The position is full‑time (40 hours per week) and will be based in London. Better Cotton Initiative offers flexible working, with core hours being 10 am – 4 pm. The position will potentially require limited international travel.
