Job Description:

This role involves working within a team delivering tertiary-level surgical care to plastic surgery cancer patients. It requires a dedicated individual interested in plastic surgery, who will be immersed in complex surgery under direct consultant supervision. Pivotal to the role are good communication skills to discuss detailed diagnosis, complex surgical issues, and subsequent management. A strong background in general gynaecology is required to provide a good understanding of the patient journey prior to cancer diagnosis and to support patients throughout. The fellow must work well in a team and across other surgical and non‑surgical specialties at The Christie. Surgical training will be tailored according to the individual’s ability.

Main duties of the job

Active participation in weekly specialist multi‑disciplinary team meetings to triage patients for local or specialist surgery; consultation of new and follow‑up patients in clinics supervised by a consultant and supported by a clinical nurse specialist; identification and subsequent management of complex pre‑operative issues; daily teaching ward rounds and pre‑operative assessments with fixed theatre sessions; surgical training tailored to the individual fellow’s ability with a wide range of surgical exposure; opportunity to provide emergency services covering all surgical specialities in the directorate (gynaecology, colorectal, urology & plastics) if the SAS doctor wishes; research, audit and involvement in clinical governance, accommodated within the weekly timetable. The role also involves teaching and support to junior doctors, clinical fellows in plastic surgery and other surgical specialties, medical students and advanced nurse practitioners and surgical first assistants.

Job responsibilities

Contribute to a comprehensive plastic and reconstructive service including management of melanoma and non‑melanoma skin cancer, microsurgery, perineal reconstruction and joint operating with other surgical specialties.

The role will be responsible for:

  • Delivering a high‑quality tertiary referral skin cancer service and breast reconstruction.
  • Independently running follow‑up clinics and local anaesthetic theatre lists for skin cancer cases.
  • Being part of the team for microsurgical cases.
  • Pre‑operative preparation and post‑operative care for patients.
  • Actively participating in regular audit, SMDT and research meetings.
  • Committing to maintaining a high quality of service to patients, with particular regard to high levels of patient safety, by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and audit against relevant standards. The postholder will be required to be familiar with:
    • Implementation of Trust Risk Management strategy and understanding its implications within the area of work.
    • Compliance with the Blood Transfusion policy to ensure a safe service is provided to patients.
    • All Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene, and undertaking annual training upgrades in infection prevention and control.
  • Having annual appraisal and reporting to the clinical lead consultant supervisor/mentor for clinical governance.
  • Preparing for and undertaking protective interventions in a manner consistent with evidence‑based practice and maintaining patient safety.
  • Adhering to the Trust Mandatory Training Policy.

Person Specification

Essential Attainments

  • Medical degree
  • MBBS, MRCS or equivalent
  • Evidence of involvement in relevant training or clinical activities

Desirable Attainments

  • FRCS
  • Evidence of publications

Experience

Essential Experience

  • Plastic surgery training or experience of at least 2 years above ST3 level
  • At least 4 years of surgical experience with 2 years in plastic surgery
  • Audit experience
  • Teaching experience

Desirable Experience

  • Plastic surgery training across all specialties
  • Experience of working 2 years in NHS
  • Evidence of engagement with management and/or audit processes
  • Evidence of teaching and involvement in the education of medical students and junior doctors

Personal Skills

  • Ability to independently operate skin cancer work and run follow‑up clinics.
  • Awareness of development needs and a desire to achieve this through evidence‑based appraisal.
