Quality Assurance Specialist
We are seeking a highly enthusiastic, motivated, and detail‑oriented individual with excellent technical, communication, and interpersonal skills to join our diverse and skilled Pharmacy Technical Services team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the day‑to‑day delivery of the Quality Assurance service, including the allocation of duties to support staff and the resolution of operational issues to ensure an efficient and timely service.
The role requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and involves regular communication with customers and healthcare professionals, both within and external to the Trust.
Main duties of the job
Ensuring adherence to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017.
Supervising and managing the technical and support staff assigned to the Quality Assurance Service.
Coordinating and contributing to the day‑to‑day operation of the Quality Control and Quality Assurance service, including:
- Incubation, reading, and verification of microbiological media, and processing associated results.
- Acting as a Releasing Officer under our MHRA Manufacturer’s Specials Licence.
- Assessment, approval, and checking of unlicensed medicines received into BTHFT.
- Microbiological and physical monitoring of cleanrooms for both BTHFT and external customers.
- Validation and qualification of pharmaceutical equipment and electronic systems.
- Quality control of Medical Gas Pipeline Systems for both BTHFT and external customers.
- Providing wider Pharmacy Quality Assurance support across the hospital.
- Supporting and operating the Pharmaceutical Quality System.
Experience
- Experience of technical pharmacy service delivery
- Experience of working in Quality Assurance & Quality Control
- Experience of working under a Manufacturer’s Specials (MS) Licence
- Experience of supervising or mentoring staff
- Experience of working in Radiopharmacy
- Experience of working under “Section 10 Exemption”
- Experience of working in a similar role

Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant subject*
- Registered as a Medical Gas Pipeline System (MGPS) Quality Controller or willing to work towards this
- Postgraduate Diploma / Masters in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Assurance or Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences or willing to work towards this.
- Qualified Pharmacy Technician registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and have significant post qualification experience OR Qualified Biomedical Scientist/Clinical Scientist registered with the Healthcare Professionals Council (or within 12 months of registration for students currently enrolled on the STP).
- Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Services Skills (NVQ) or MSc in Clinical Pharmaceutical Practice

- Flexibility in working hours to suit the needs of the department
- Occasionally able to travel long distances with own transport and work long hours, including overnight
