Senior / Principal Modelling Consultant (Nuclear Waste)
Join Amentum’s Waste Management & Disposal business to support the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver desk‑based consultancy projects for UK and international clients, contributing to technical delivery and waste‑management capability.
- Provide technical input across disciplines including groundwater flow and solute transport modelling, radionuclide release assessments, gas and two‑phase flow modelling, and engineered and natural barrier performance over long timescales.
- Lead and coordinate technical work packages or small project teams, ensuring delivery to time, cost and quality requirements.
- Interpret client requirements, develop solutions and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Support, mentor and develop junior staff, reviewing work and contributing to professional growth.
- Produce high‑quality technical reports and presentations for specialist and non‑specialist audiences.
- Engage in business development activities such as proposal writing and client engagement.
Essential Criteria
- Degree in Earth sciences, physical sciences, engineering or mathematics.
- Experience in development and application of numerical and/or complex environmental models.
- Ability to evaluate complex systems and models, extract safety insights and present findings effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing clear, accurate technical documentation.
- Strong organisational and project delivery skills, managing competing priorities within time and budget constraints.
- Capability to work autonomously and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Problem‑solving ability and a solutions‑focused mindset.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Desire to contribute to the company’s radioactive waste management and decommissioning strategy capability.
- Ability to obtain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance.
Additional (Advantageous) Criteria
- Experience with environmental safety case development for radioactive waste disposal facilities.
- Knowledge of UK nuclear regulatory frameworks and repository development programmes.
- Experience developing groundwater flow and solute transport models (near surface and deep underground).
- Familiarity with GoldSim, PHREEQC, COMSOL, PFLOTRAN, Python, MATLAB or similar tools.
- Experience supporting licence applications or regulatory review.
- UK nuclear industry or radioactive waste management sector experience.
