Title: Nuclear Safety Engineer

Salary range: £45,000 to £65,000 per annum depending on experience.

Location: Bristol or Gloucester preferred, but any Frazer‑Nash office is considered.

Working Pattern: A flexible hybrid model that splits time between the office, client sites and working from home.

Overview

We support clients in all parts of the UK civil and defence nuclear industry, including non‑reactor, experimental and demonstrator facilities. Working in this role, you will manage and undertake project work on significant nuclear safety and assurance tasks, supervise other staff, and help develop and enhance support for existing and new nuclear projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and undertake project work for clients on or in support of nuclear safety and assurance tasks.
  • Supervise other staff in carrying out safety related work.
  • Develop a proven track record of assessing and justifying engineering problems, producing safety justifications.
  • Oversee and manage projects, develop and maintain client relationships, and win new work.
  • Coach junior colleagues’ development.
  • Develop and execute strategies to handle complex nuclear safety challenges.
  • Lead technical tasks such as safety assessment, risk assessment, hazard identification, fault schedules, design basis analysis, probabilistic analysis, and safety functional requirements.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of the safety of nuclear facilities.
  • Qualify and substantiate systems against safety requirements.
  • Carry out internal and external hazard assessments.
  • Develop and support safety cases for nuclear and non‑nuclear plant.
  • Author, review or verify safety‑related documents.

Essential Qualifications

  • Demonstrable 4+ years of civil or defence nuclear infrastructure experience.
  • A Degree, Master’s or PhD in a relevant STEM subject.
  • Well‑developed organisational skills and a proven track record of leading technical teams.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with changing priorities and operate autonomously.
  • An appetite to continually learn, improve and stretch yourself.
  • A willingness to travel and spend time on client sites.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in highly regulated and/or high‑hazard industries.
  • Technical oversight, leadership, and self‑directed review experience.
  • Experience in project management and commercial aspects.
  • Technical consultancy experience.
  • Chartered status (or working towards) with a professional institution.

Other Requirements

Due to the nature of the work undertaken, candidates will be required to undergo pre‑employment screening and satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
