Role Overview

As a Senior or Associate Principal Engineer in our Bridges and Civils team within the Transportation business, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation across the UK and Ireland. You will develop high‑quality civil and structural designs for new builds, renewals, maintenance and assessments on major railway and civil engineering projects, including Midlands Rail Hub, East West Rail, Lower Thames Crossing and National Highways schemes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high‑quality civil and structural designs for new constructions, renewal, maintenance and assessment works.
  • Collaborate with national and international design teams, applying expertise and leadership to achieve sustainable, positive impacts on society and the environment.
  • Manage the production and review of design documentation, including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications.
  • Carry out technical work independently and provide guidance to junior staff members.
  • Lead engineering teams in design, assessment and maintenance of structural or railway civil engineering projects, contributing civils/structures input on multi‑disciplinary projects.
  • Develop and agree scopes, manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverables.
  • Use analytical skills to derive solutions to engineering problems, apply engineering judgement to appraise options and recommend the most suitable solution.
  • Lead bids and tenders, secure work and develop client relationships.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A professional qualification (CEng or IEng) and membership of the ICE or IStructE.
  • Experience acting as a CRE/Deputy CRE/Workpackage Manager or Deputy Engineering Manager for railway civil engineering works or station projects.
  • Experience working with key clients such as Network Rail, HS2, local authorities or major contractors and developers.
  • Good understanding of relevant design standards (e.g. Eurocodes, DMRB, MCHW and Network Rail standards).
  • Practical knowledge of railway civil engineering or station design.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of clients, stakeholders and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.
  • Good project management skills, commercial awareness, financial control and ability to deliver across a range of contract types, including the management of specialists, independent checkers and local authorities.
