Fresh Produce Senior Buying Manager

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a world‑class supplier network and negotiate complex commercial agreements with growers globally.
  • Lead rigorous quality inspections and sensory assessments to ensure every batch meets strict appearance and texture benchmarks.
  • Direct the creative and commercial aspects of the fresh produce category, from initial sample tastings to final sign‑off on packaging and presentation.
  • Develop strategic logistics solutions to ensure produce arrives at our Regional Distribution Centres on schedule for stocking our 1,000+ stores.
  • Present confidently to Buying Directors and Board Directors and deputise for the Head of Department when required.
  • Mentor, train, and upskill junior buyers to build a high‑performing team.
  • Take ownership of high‑level decisions and support the wider team’s success as the designated deputy for the Head of Department.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Established background as a Senior Buyer with relevant experience in fresh produce or a similar commercial food retail role.
  • Success leading complex supplier negotiations and managing multi‑million‑pound investments across volatile global commodities.
  • Deep understanding of how seasonality, weather, and commodity costs impact yield, pricing, and customer satisfaction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fresh produce production, including varietal differences, growing conditions, post‑harvest handling, and shelf life.
  • Pragmatic, logical, and quick‑thinking in a fast‑paced environment, with the confidence to influence stakeholders and deputise for Heads of Department.
  • Full UK driving licence and residence (or willingness to relocate) within a one‑hour commute of the Lidl GB Head Office in Tolworth.
  • German language proficiency is desirable, though not essential.

Compensation

£93,500 – £103,400 (annual gross salary, pro‑rata).
