About the role

Waltham Forest is preparing to open its first dedicated Crematorium Service — a landmark development that will enhance the support we provide to residents at some of the most sensitive and significant moments in their lives. This new service represents an important step forward for the borough, and we are building a team that reflects the compassion, professionalism, and care our community deserves.

As part of this launch, we are creating nine new roles across the service. Recruitment will take place in phases, beginning with two key leadership positions that will help shape the foundations of this new provision.

Crematorium Manager

A dedicated operational lead responsible for establishing and managing the day‑to‑day running of the new crematorium, maintaining the highest standards of service, safety, and dignity.

Under the direction of the Bereavement Services Manager this role is responsible for the delivery of high-quality Cremation services for the London Borough of Waltham Forest, through effective leadership and development of staff, allocation of workload, management of facilities and by creating strong professional relationships with all stakeholders.

  • Ensure all cremations comply with statutory forms (Forms 1–10) and Cremation (England and Wales) Regulations 2008, regs. 16–19.
  • Maintain permanent registers of cremations and ashes disposal; verify identity of remains before cremation; provide public access to records; ensure compliance with environmental permits (emissions).
  • Ensure all documentation conforms to current legalisation, statutory guidance, and best practice.
  • Committed to “Right First Time”, accuracy, customer care and providing a high-quality public focused service.
  • Ensure presentation of the chapel and public areas to a high standard.
  • Flexible approach to working hours / days – as required by the needs of the business.
  • Communicate with sensitivity, with diverse audiences in emotive circumstances. Deal with people at all levels confidently, sensitively and diplomatically.
  • Work within a policy framework and regulatory guidelines, applying knowledge of systems, procedures and best practice. Operate within broad managerial direction, within a policy framework and regulatory guidelines, to ensure performance standards are met within a framework of policy and legislation.
  • Plan own time and co‑ordinate the work of others. Plan, organise and deliver interventions and actions. Provide professional advice, assessments or referrals.
  • Exercise professional judgement in assessing stakeholder requirements, potential risk and quality assurance of service. Monitor and evaluate performance / service delivery, ensuring all parties are informed of progress / issues as required.
  • Manage a team of 7 and oversee the cremation process, ensuring legislative processes are recorded and followed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Post is required to procure operational requirements for the crematorium and minor contract management.
  • Experience in staff management responsibilities of the Crematorium team of 7 staff.
  • Responsible for improving service delivery and promoting paid services.
  • Degree or equivalent or vocational qualification in relevant subject or area.
  • Maths and English Language GCSE grades A‑C or equivalent.
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
  • ICCM accredited qualifications.
