Overview
The overriding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement and by working closely with the broader Multi‑disciplinary Team (MDT).
Location
This post will be based between the acute geriatric wards at Kings Mill Hospital, the subacute and non‑acute geriatric wards at Newark Hospital and the geriatric non‑acute/rehabilitation wards at Mansfield Community Hospital.
Mansfield Community Hospital has 3 Geriatric Wards (Oakham Ward, Lindhurst Ward, Chatsworth Ward). Each of these wards is staffed by one middle grade doctor/ACP working with the MDT and supported by a consultant who provides 2 sessions per week to the ward.
These wards are for frail, elderly patients who have been transferred from acute medical wards at Kings Mill Hospital but who are medically fit and may require a period of rehabilitation before being discharged to their place of residence.
Education & Development
There are excellent educational opportunities, both formal (weekly medical Grand Round, weekly Geriatric Department educational meeting) and informal. There are also opportunities for audit and QIP projects.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive medical service to inpatients across Kings Mill Hospital, Newark Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital, including ward work and regular out‑of‑hours duties (weekends and night shifts).
- Establish and maintain liaison with users of the service including local General Practitioners and other external agencies.
- Perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances; deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.
- Actively participate in audit, teaching and research activities within the department, including mentorship of medical students.
- Liaise with a multidisciplinary team regarding patient care.
- Undertake administrative work, for example discharge summaries and letters/reports, within prescribed timescales.
- Comply with Royal College requirements for continued professional development and participate in the Trust’s appraisal system.
- May be required to undertake similar duties at other hospitals within the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust.
