Role Overview

The PACU is centrally placed in the Main Theatre Suite of 17 theatres and has 24 bays (including 4 paediatric bays). It covers two in‑patient theatres in the Day Procedure Unit, two Obstetric Theatres, MRI/CT for patients having had general anaesthesia and the Brachytherapy Suite. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team (nurse, ODPs, HCAs, TSWs, medical staff) you will care for adults and children in the immediate post‑anaesthetic/surgical phase, supporting the Clinical Leader in managing patient activity, staffing and utilisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Clinical Leader in providing leadership and effective management and co‑ordination of patient activity, staffing and utilisation throughout the patient’s operative pathway.
  • Maintain clinical competence and act as a resource to team members.
  • Ensure that optimum care is given to all patients and is appropriately documented.
  • Deliver a high‑quality service for all patients within sphere of responsibility.
  • Act as a role model and be a credible practitioner within the clinical area.
  • Evaluate service provision with the line manager and ensure agreed Trust standards are adhered to.
  • Facilitate the induction of new staff within the department and support the education of learners.
  • Ensure the dissemination of information to allow staff to take responsibility for decision making within the team.
  • Ensure the promotion of safety, well‑being and interests of patients, staff and visitors to the clinical areas and investigate and record incidents, accidents and near misses.
  • Support any “Human Factors” training and promote teamwork and culture.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Managerial aptitude and knowledge of hospital policy and procedure.
  • High level of clinical skill set appropriate to the department.
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to act as a resource to the team.
  • Risk assessment skills and knowledge for the area.
