Job Summary

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is responsible for saving and improving lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation services across the UK. We are seeking a Lead Nurse in Organ Donation who will provide expert clinical leadership and operational support to our regional donation teams.

In this pivotal role you will lead and support Specialist Nurses in Organ Donation (SNODs), work collaboratively with hospital teams and stakeholders, and maximize donation opportunities while upholding the highest standards of care and compassion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and manage delivery of Key Performance Indicators to maximize the number of organs and tissues within the geographical donation area.
  • Shared responsibility for operationally managing all aspects of the service provided by the Organ Donation Services team within the area.
  • Directly manage a team of staff, allocating duties on a rotational basis, and manage the full area budget and overall 24‑hour on‑call service.
  • Provide input and challenge to hospital development planning and lead corrective actions where necessary, ensuring the national strategy is implemented and evaluated.
  • Operationally manage staff within the team that fall within delegated areas of responsibility.
  • Participate in a 24‑hour, 365‑day per year on‑call rota and maintain clinical credibility in all aspects of organ donation.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration (Adult or Paediatric).
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification in allied health or related field, or evidence of equivalent knowledge.
  • Demonstrable postgraduate-level specialist experience in leadership and management.
  • Commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
  • Full and valid UK driving licence with no more than 6 points.

Experience

  • Proven leadership and management experience in an acute hospital setting relevant to donation (e.g., ICU, theatres, emergency medicine).
  • Recent experience working within an Organ Donation Service as an SN-OD.
  • Awareness of current professional issues and developments within coordination, nursing and the NHS.
  • Proven ability to evaluate safety and effectiveness of own clinical practice.
  • Experience implementing effective change within teams or across an organisation.
  • Experience with information technology using Microsoft Office packages or equivalent systems.
