Do you thrive on turning complexity into elegant, user-centered journeys? Are you inspired by the prospect of helping 50million users/month and publishing scientific knowledge?

Overview

The ScienceDirect UX team at Elsevier is a tight-knit group of researchers and designers working across the flagship ScienceDirect product and its partner platforms. As a UX / UI Designer, you will partner with product, research, and engineering in cross‑functional squads to deliver user‑centered solutions to complex challenges. You will own design work end‑to‑end, use the design system to ensure consistency, and leverage data and insights from users, analysts, and customer-facing teams to inform decisions.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with product managers and engineers to define the roadmap and backlog, ensuring strategic alignment and effective working processes.
  • Support researchers in conducting user research and usability tests to understand user needs and inform design decisions.
  • Ideate and prototype quickly, producing detailed design deliverables that can be shipped into production.
  • Ensure product designs meet user needs, support business goals, are technically feasible, and align with the design system.
  • Collaborate with designers across ScienceDirect and other products to create aligned experiences.
  • Help improve design team practices, support other designers as needed, and engage with the broader Elsevier design community.

Skills & qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience as a UX/UI or product designer.
  • A portfolio that showcases a range of work, including UX, UI, and ideally user research or UX analytics.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency in producing UX flows, design concepts, high‑fidelity designs, and prototypes.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, able to influence decisions across design, product, and engineering teams.
  • Experience delivering products embedded within a squad in an Agile environment.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to tackle complex problem spaces, experiment with new tools, learn, and share within the Elsevier community.

Nice to have

  • Experience with content‑heavy products; designing for search, browse, and deep reading experiences.
  • Experience working in complex content ecosystems, information science, or library science.
  • Familiarity with enterprise‑level design systems.
