About the Role
We are seeking an experienced General Manager to oversee local Social Housing Repairs & Maintenance contracts, ensuring the business operates on sound operational and commercial principles. This pivotal role will drive a high‑performing culture, foster professional client relationships, and embed a customer‑focused ethos across the team. The General Manager will provide clear leadership, mentoring and motivation to the branch team, set strategic targets and objectives, and lead by example.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop sustainable client and stakeholder relationships and ensure exceptional customer engagement.
- Maintain compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Manage performance against P&L targets and monitor KPIs, upholding governance and risk management processes.
- Use business systems such as MCM, MSP, dashboards and Workday for reporting and compliance.
- Embed company values and procedures through monthly Branch/Contract meetings, annual appraisals and staff surveys.
- Resolve personnel issues and support the technical, trades and administrative staff.
- Analyse data proactively and report on performance and risk.
- Manage complaints, ensuring they are promptly resolved.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of health and safety practices.
- Drive a Mears vehicle: must be over 21, licence held >3 months, <9 points.
Essential Criteria
- Strong understanding of contract/project management principles.
- Experience leading and managing a team of technical, trades and administrative staff.
- Ability to manage personnel issues and solve problems swiftly.
- Ability to work productively in a pressured environment while maintaining high service levels.
- Genuine understanding of industry and service delivery to a range of clients.
- IT literate, proficient in Microsoft packages.
- Experience in a social housing repairs and maintenance role.
- Financial and commercial forecasting, including budgeting.
- Experience working towards social value targets.
- Proven track record of achieving, monitoring and managing performance targets.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, both internally and externally.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise workloads.
- Ability to analyse data and use it in decision making.
- Knowledge of health and safety practices.
Preferred Criteria
- SMSTS qualification.
- HNC/HND or equivalent in Building Studies.
- Level 4/5 qualification in Leadership & Management or willingness to obtain it.
