This is a New Post within Sherwood Forest Hospitals
Full time (Minimum 10 PA) Lower Limb Arthroplasty in Trauma and Orthopaedics Consultant Surgeon with fellowship.
This new consultant will join a team of Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultants providing trauma and elective orthopaedic services to Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. All trauma and emergency admissions are managed at Kings Mill Hospital site. The elective orthopaedic services are provided both at Kings Mill and Newark hospital. We have two Newark theatres that are dedicated to elective orthopaedics and are protected even during winter surge.
Trauma commitment includes weekly hot day activity (Virtual Fracture clinic and Trauma theatre) with 1 in 4 week day on call and 1 in 16 week end on calls . Interest in Surgical management of Upper Limb Trauma is desirable. Also should be competent with general Lower limb and paediatric trauma for emergency on calls.
Main duties of the job
Duties & responsibilities of the Post
- provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to Sherwood Forest Hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department;
- out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in Consultant on-call rota where applicable;
- cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences;
- any responsibility which relates to a special interest;
- professional supervision and management of junior medical staff;
- responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally;
- participating in medical audit;
- managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.
Working for our organisation
The Department provides Orthopaedic services to King’s Mill Hospital and Newark Hospital. The Trauma service is based at the Kings Mill Hospital.
The unit consists of three wards, one of these being protected for elective Orthopaedics, and two trauma wards. There is also a Day Case Unit with day case bed and overnight facility.
We have close contacts with Physicians in the Department of Health Care of the Elderly, which enables rapid transfer of elderly patients into rehabilitation beds.
There are three dedicated Orthopaedic theatres with laminar flow at Kings Mill and two at Newark hospital. In addition one of the Day case theatre is laminar flow and for orthopaedic day case surgery. We have a full range of elective and trauma equipment.

Qualifications
- Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview
- Success in Intercollegiate Speciality Examination (FRCS Tr &Orth) or Equivalent
- Lower Limb Arthroplasty Fellowship
- ATLS
Clinical Experience
- Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan
- Extensive practical Trauma & Orthopaedic experience
- Current experience of working within the NHS
- Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including Senior trainees
Teaching
- Active interest in teaching
- Evidence of podium presentations
- Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role
Research
- Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice
- Publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Research evidence
- Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
- The potential to take lead clinician roles
Other
- Communication skills – to have language competency and communication skills necessary to do the job safely
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, nurses, GPs and other agencies
