Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position to work on the ERC Advanced Grant on “Scaling and Concentration Laws in Information Theory” led by Professor Albert Guillén i Fàbregas. The project studies the fundamental limits of channels and sources where the optimal number of messages scales sub‑exponentially with the length, concentration laws for random coding, sub‑optimal decoding, the design of optimal codes, and related statistical inference problems.
We seek a candidate with a genuine interest in Shannon Theory and a background in information theory, statistics, communications theory and/or channel coding, and experience with optimisation and asymptotic methods in probability and statistics is desirable. The research focus will be agreed with the PI based on the candidate’s interests and skills. The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Albert Guillén i Fàbregas and participate in the PI’s research group. The project is run in collaboration with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, and short research stays in Barcelona may be possible.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake independent research related to the project and assist with ongoing research tasks.
- Develop numerical experiments and analyse results.
- Write up findings for publication and present work at conferences and seminars, both internally and externally.
- Assist in organising seminars and study groups.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a degree in Electrical, Information or Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematics. A Master’s degree is desirable. A background in optimisation and asymptotic methods in probability and statistics is desirable.
Post holders will be located in Central Cambridge.
