Mechanical/BMS Craftsperson – Infrastructure and Laboratory Services

Full‑time, permanent position based on site at the Science Campus, South Mimms, Hertfordshire. This role is available only to candidates based in the UK.

Role Overview

The post reports to the Mechanical Manager and supports the mechanical and building management system (BMS) team to ensure the South Mimms Site (SMS) operates safely and compliant with legal and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct day‑to‑day maintenance of mechanical areas, ensuring engineering systems support agency objectives and meet health & safety and ISO 9001 requirements.
  • Provide calibration and maintenance of BMS equipment for temperature, pressure and airflow monitoring of containment laboratories and cleanrooms.
  • Coordinate and manage the planned preventative maintenance programme for mechanical and engineering plant, briefing and supervising contractors.
  • Investigate and resolve faults and breakdowns, prioritising safety and operational continuity.
  • Support out‑of‑hours coverage on a rota basis, making decisions and actions to maintain site safety.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Significant experience in a maintenance or building services environment, working to a planned preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Practical knowledge of control systems and a range of engineering equipment.
  • Experience maintaining and fault‑finding on equipment for containment laboratories, including air‑handling, clean‑rooms, BMS, steam boilers, compressed air, autoclaves, plate heat exchangers, drainage systems, pumps, water treatment, and microbiological safety cabinets.

Technical & Knowledge Requirements

  • Successful completion of a registered engineering apprenticeship or NVQ Level 2 / BTEC in heating and ventilation or equivalent.
  • Steam plant maintenance qualification desirable.
  • Current knowledge of PUWER, PSSR, LOLER, COSHH and manual handling regulations.
