Estates Building Craftsman (Carpenter)

This role will assist in the delivery of a high-quality estates service to the Trust; this post holder will be responsible for any carpentry and building repairs at the Princess Alexandra Hospital along with undertaking of PPM duties as required.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have the ability to carry out varied carpentry duties to a competent standard. The role requires working in a team and undertaking standalone tasks with an emphasis on a quality finish to meet customers’ high expectations. Work must be conducted in accordance with current legislation, British Standards Codes of Practice, safe systems of work and recognised industry standards to minimise damage to the fabric of the property and create minimal disruptions to patients and visitors. The post holder must manage and prioritise their own workload, provide advice in relation to operational maintenance and undertake duties covering risk assessment, audit and inspection of operational estate safety, liaison with external contractors and other statutory authorities.

Job responsibilities

  • To perform work of routine and non-routine, non-complex and complex nature.
  • To be responsible for repairs and routine planned maintenance activities as directed by management.
  • To take all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment.
  • To carry out additional work involving glazing, locksmith, scaffolding and wood machinery.
  • To interpret and work from all instructions, drawings and specifications appropriate to the trade without supervision.
  • To use carpentry equipment and machinery in accordance with all legislative and statutory guidance, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
  • To carry out new work, installation and refurbishment throughout the Trust premises when required.
  • To carry out glazing repairs as and when required.
  • To understand the relationship of other craft persons’ work.
  • To share responsibility for a carpenter apprentice.
  • To learn new techniques with training as necessary.
  • To carry out planned preventative inspections in accordance with Trust and statutory guidance.
  • To communicate with ward managers, department managers, patients and visitors and other Trust staff.
  • To be aware of patient and visitor confidentiality when working in clinical areas.
  • To complete all report sheets and plant log books as necessary.
  • The post holder is responsible for ensuring all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.
  • The post holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trust’s activities.
  • Any other duties which may be required from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 (or higher) vocational trade certificate in Carpentry e.g., NVQ 3, C&G Level 3.
  • All other relevant trade related Certificates (CSCS, PAMSA).

Experience

  • Experience in a commercial/industrial maintenance post.
  • Experience in healthcare.
  • Proven experience 1st and 2nd fix installation and in-depth knowledge of construction methods.
  • Knowledge of other trade topics (Electrical, Welding, Construction etc).
