As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Barnwood Ltd, you will support the Quantity Surveying team in managing the financial and contractual aspects of construction projects. You will help ensure projects are delivered on budget, to a high standard, and in line with client expectations, while developing your own skills and knowledge through structured training and on-the-job experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Quantity Surveying team in delivering projects within agreed budgets and commercial targets
  • Assist in the placement and management of contracts and subcontracts to help maximise project margins
  • Support the identification, review, and management of commercial and contractual risks in line with company procedures
  • Assist with the preparation, assessment, and submission of variations and change orders
  • Help with procurement activities including subcontractor orders, materials, and plant hire
  • Support measurement, valuation, and cost control activities, including assisting with applications for payment and supplier invoicing
  • Contribute to maintaining positive cash flow through accurate financial control and reporting
  • Ensure compliance with Barnwood policies, including HSQE (Health, Safety, Quality & Environment) and risk management procedures
  • Promote Barnwood’s values in all dealings with clients, colleagues, and supply chain partners

Other Information

Entry Requirements

The default entry route for this role is the HTQ in Construction & the Built Environment apprenticeship, which gives apprentices a solid grounding in the sector. However, in exceptional cases — such as applicants who already hold an HNC in Construction—the Higher Degree Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management may be considered.

  • GCSEs: Minimum Grade 4 (C) or above in English Language and MathematicsNote: Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent is not accepted as an alternative
  • A Levels: Minimum of two A Levels in any subjectGeneral Studies and AS Levels may be included in UCAS tariff where applicable
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: Accepted (any subject)
  • Access to HE Diploma: Must include 15 Level 3 credits at Merit
  • International Baccalaureate: Accepted (any subject combination considered)

Skills & Experience

  • Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel
  • Any exposure to finance, credit control, or procurement (desirable but not essential)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues and clients
  • Good organisational and time management skills
