Job Purpose
The range of Machine Operator roles varies between categories and technologies, but generally sits within the Filling, Forklift and Material & Waste Transfer, Mixer, Packing & Reporting Job Families. The Machine Operator is responsible for the safe operation of production equipment to deliver customer requirements through completion of the production plan, adhering to quality standards and maximising cost effectiveness, optimal running and equipment efficiency.
The Machine Operator is expected to carry out autonomous maintenance such as cleaning, lubrication and inspection activities, and to record any issues or problems with the equipment that cannot be resolved independently so that they can be passed to the Technical Operator.
Key Skills and Responsibilities
- Operate machinery safely and effectively to meet the production plan; conduct inspections, cleaning and lubrication as required.
- Possess a basic knowledge of the principles of mechanism, motion and pneumatics.
- Maintain cleaning and checking standards of machinery.
- Understand properties of materials being handled and perform correct adjustment and setting.
- Collaborate with Professional Maintenance and Quality Control staff to reduce breakdowns and defects.
- Carry out product and process changeovers or washouts to maintain quality standards while minimising impact on the production plan.
- Perform start‑up and shutdown procedures, ensuring area and equipment are clean and safe.
- Carry out changeovers between products in line with defined standards.
- Inspect machines and resolve issues to keep them running optimally.
- Keep area and machines clean and tidy in line with defined standards.
- Provide a continuous supply of appropriate packaging and raw material from local storage areas to the machine.
- Record hand‑over activities and shift events accurately.
- Work safely using appropriate safety and environmental procedures and raise SHE occurrences, waste non‑conformances and quality non‑conformances via appropriate mechanisms.
- Apply continuous improvement principles and use tools to identify and eliminate time, cost and waste losses.
- Use problem‑solving tools to address and resolve issues within skill set.
- Work effectively within a team, coordinating production activities including changeovers, set‑up, cleaning and shutdown.
- Share knowledge with other team members.
- Demonstrate the physical capability to move between workstations, lift loads, feed materials and perform manual tasks; able to work up to 12 hours per shift.
- Perform basic interaction with computers and interfaces to input quality data and process information.
Other Requirements
- Flexible to work other units and carry out other tasks when trained to do so.
Professional Qualifications
- National school leaver qualifications in reading, comprehension, writing and mathematics.
Essential Experience
- Basic mechanical awareness of principles for factory automation.
- Ability to maintain focus and discipline for tasks while demonstrating good problem‑solving skills to protect output targets.
- Strong team‑working skills and willingness to share knowledge with colleagues.
- IT skills – competent in use of machine data and control systems that record material movement, losses and quality.
Preferred / Desirable
- Experience as a Machine Operator.
- Experience of manufacturing in a Fast‑Moving Consumer Goods company.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for progression to the Unilever Technical Operator Curriculum.
