Bookkeeper / Accounts Assistant – Accountancy Practice Firm, Chelmsford

£27,000 – £34,000

A long-established accountancy practice based in mid‑Essex is looking to appoint a confident and capable Bookkeeper / Accounts Assistant to join its ever‑growing team. The firm is seeking a practice‑experienced individual who enjoys working with a varied client base and thrives in a busy, professional environment. This position offers a stable, well‑rounded role with plenty of client interaction, exposure to different accounting systems, and the chance to contribute to a friendly, supportive team.

About the Role

The successful post holder will take responsibility for the bookkeeping needs of a portfolio of mainly SME clients spanning a range of industry sectors. You’ll work with cloud‑based software to maintain accurate financial records and support the wider accounts team with management reporting and compliance tasks. Typical duties will include:

  • Managing day‑to‑day bookkeeping tasks for the portfolio of clients
  • Processing financial transactions and maintaining organised ledgers
  • Supporting with monthly and quarterly management accounts as required
  • Preparing and filing quarterly VAT returns with submissions to the HMRC
  • Completing bank, sales, and purchase reconciliations
  • Updating fixed asset schedules
  • Liaising with clients to request information and resolve queries with the HMRC
  • Assisting and training clients in the use of cloud‑based software such as XERO, Sage, and Quickbooks
  • Supporting colleagues across the department to ensure deadlines are strictly adhered to.

About You

  • At least 2+ years’ experience gained working for a UK based practice environment in the capacity of either Bookkeeper or Accounts Assistant
  • Solid practical exposure of handling a client portfolio spanning and delivering a comprehensive range of services to include bookkeeping, VAT handling, and management accounts (would be ideal)
  • Proficiency in a range of cloud‑based software to ideally include XERO, Sage50, and Quickbooks
  • Proven experience of communicating with clients both over the phone and in emails
  • Organised, methodical and diligent
