Bookkeeper / Accounts Assistant – Accountancy Practice Firm (Chelmsford)

£27,000 – £34,000

A long‑established accountancy practice based in mid‑Essex is looking to appoint a confident and capable Bookkeeper / Accounts Assistant to join its ever‑growing team.

The firm is seeking a practice‑experienced individual who enjoys working with a varied client base and thrives in a busy, professional environment. This position offers a stable, well‑rounded role with plenty of client interaction, exposure to different accounting systems, and the chance to contribute to a friendly, supportive team.

About the Role

The successful post holder will take responsibility for the bookkeeping needs of a portfolio of mainly SME clients spanning a range of industry sectors. You’ll work with cloud‑based software to maintain accurate financial records and support the wider accounts team with management reporting and compliance tasks.

  • Managing day‑to‑day bookkeeping tasks for the portfolio of clients
  • Processing financial transactions and maintaining organised ledgers
  • Supporting with monthly and quarterly management accounts as required
  • Preparing and filing quarterly VAT returns with submissions to HMRC
  • Completing bank, sales, and purchase reconciliations
  • Updating fixed asset schedules
  • Liaising with clients to request information and resolve queries with HMRC
  • Assisting and training clients in the use of cloud‑based software such as XERO, Sage and Quickbooks
  • Supporting colleagues across the department to ensure deadlines are strictly adhered to.

About You

  • At least 2+ years’ experience in a UK‑based practice environment as a Bookkeeper or Accounts Assistant.
  • Solid practical exposure to handling a client portfolio spanning and delivering a comprehensive range of services including bookkeeping, VAT handling, and management accounts.
  • Proficiency in cloud‑based software, ideally including XERO, Sage50 and Quickbooks.
  • Proven experience communicating with clients over the phone and by email.
  • Organised, methodical and diligent.
