Overview
Senior leadership role within the Head and Neck Clinical Service Unit, part of the Ophthalmology department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The Head of Orthoptics leads the strategic direction, operational delivery and professional standards of the orthoptic service across acute and community sites, primarily based at St James’s University Hospital and extending across multiple partner settings.
Responsibilities
- Lead service improvement, develop people, and work effectively with senior clinical and operational colleagues.
- Shape services for patients, families and staff across a large teaching trust.
- Maintain an expert clinical role within a highly specialised service.
- Work with budgets, workforce planning and service performance.
- Provide visible professional leadership while working autonomously.
- Contribute to business planning, strategic decision‑making and quality improvement.
Qualifications
- HCPC recognised qualification in Orthoptics and substantial post‑qualification clinical experience.
- Expert knowledge in assessment and management of complex ocular motility disorders.
- Significant leadership and line‑management experience within an orthoptic or ophthalmic service.
- Experience in clinical teaching, supervision and undergraduate assessment.
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, audit and evidence‑based practice.
- Experience with budgets, workforce planning and service performance.
- Excellent communication, influencing and partnership working skills.
- Strong organisational, analytical and decision‑making skills in a complex clinical environment.
Contract & Pay
Band 8c – £79,504 to £91,609 per year. Permanent, full‑time. Reference number: 000964. Location: St James’s University Hospital, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS9 7TF, United Kingdom.
