Job details

Terms & Conditions: Part Time, 18.5 hours – Friday and Saturdays

Interviews: w/c: 6th July 2026

Are you looking for part time hours with the flexibility of working more should you need to?

Are you looking to put your HGV driving qualification to good use without having to balance the challenges that many HGV roles bring?

Do you already have other commitments during the week?

You have been extensively trained making you one of the most safety conscious and advanced drivers on our roads and this can be reflected in the salaries some roles offer but now you have to consider some of the challenges that a driving role can bring with it:

  • Working away from home
  • Long, unsociable hours
  • Long distance driving
  • Negotiating traffic problems including congestion and road closures

Have you thought about using your licence in a role that is local?

  • Driving is local with no nights away
  • Routes are meticulously planned to ensure tasks are completed within your working day
  • All work is carried out within Blackburn and Darwen
  • Links with our Highways service to minimise disruption
  • Friday and Saturday, 2 days per week not exceeding 9.25 hours per day
  • 7am start with collective task and finish in operation.
  • Mid-week working may be available as additional hours if needed.
  • 25 days annual leave per year rising to 30 after 5 years’ service (pro rata)

Our role is to provide a quality and efficient Refuse Collection Service to the residents of our borough including all recycling collection activities. Whilst the role reaps the benefits mentioned above it is stop‑start driving, where you must be very aware of your surroundings, as working often in tight spaces/areas. You will be required to manoeuvre the vehicle around other parked vehicles safely and cautiously, being aware of pedestrians and members of the public.

Duties to include but not limited to:

  • Undertaking vehicle checks each morning and reporting any defects.
  • Undertake driving duties on allocated rounds and transporting waste to designated disposal sites
  • Supervisory duties and responsible for the crew.
  • Working as part of a team.
  • Ensuring that the highest level of customer care is maintained.

It is an essential requirement of this role that you have a Class 2 HGV driving licence and a valid CPC Driver Qualification card. For an informal discussion about the role please contact Ethan Gornall on ethan.gornall@blackburn.gov.uk

Should sufficient applications be received this role may close early.
