A well-established Lung Cancer Specialist Nursing team is seeking a clinical nurse specialist to care for patients undergoing oncology treatment at two hospital sites: The Christie Hospital main site (Withington) and an outreach clinic at Oldham Hospital. The role is part‑time permanent (22.5 hours per week) with a permanent contract. Salary is £39,959 – £48,117 per annum (pro rata).

Main duties of the job

  • Provide comprehensive key worker support to patients with lung cancer, their carers and relatives at main and outreach sites.
  • Develop expert knowledge of lung cancer treatment pathways and collaborate with referral teams to streamline patient care.
  • Play an integral role in the development of specialist services for lung cancer patients.
  • Be a visible and approachable role model, disseminating best practice throughout clinical areas.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills in all settings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

CLINICAL

  1. Perform a comprehensive key worker role for people with lung cancer throughout their care pathway.
  2. Develop and maintain advanced clinical skills in assessment and knowledge of diagnosis and treatment options.
  3. Liaise with other clinical nurse specialists and referral units to ensure effective information transfer.
  4. Collect, collate, evaluate, and report information, maintaining accurate patient records in accordance with clinical governance.
  5. Work independently, managing own caseload of patients.
  6. Use advanced communication skills across settings, including discussions around patient care and treatment plans.
  7. Provide emotional support to patients, families and staff during challenging situations.
  8. Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care and development of services.
  9. Provide support to patients attending clinics at the main site and outreach clinics.
  10. Apply evidence‑based research to practice.
  11. Act in accordance with the NMC code of conduct and guiding documents.

LEADERSHIP

  1. Provide specialist clinical knowledge to colleagues, patients and carers within and outside the Trust.
  2. Play an integral role in operational and strategic development of specialist services.
  3. Undertake clinical supervision of health care professional colleagues individually or in groups.
  4. Contribute to relevant initiatives and support senior colleagues.
  5. Act as an effective role model, contributing positively to nursing leadership.
  6. Work with managers and staff to identify areas for practice change.
  7. Ensure efficient use of physical and financial resources.
  8. Monitor health, safety and security, promoting best practice.
  9. Participate in development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines at local and network level.

EDUCATION

  1. Identify own learning needs, plan and evaluate programmes of education.
  2. Attend meetings and conferences to stay conversant with current practices.

  4. Educate pre‑ and post‑registration health care professionals and medical staff.
  5. Ensure compliance with mandatory training and revalidation requirements.
  6. Receive clinical supervision as part of professional development.
  7. Maintain up‑to‑date skills, knowledge and awareness of professional issues.
  8. Participate in planned programmes of appraisal.

RESEARCH & AUDIT

  1. Identify and undertake research, clinical audit and benchmarking to improve patient care.
  2. Disseminate findings through presentations and publications.
  3. Contribute to writing protocols relevant to the speciality.
  4. Promote evidence‑based practice and clinical audit within the Trust.
  5. Promote nursing research and evidence‑based practice relevant to the speciality.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  1. Develop teaching and presentation skills and apply principles in the clinical setting.
  2. Keep up to date with current literature and research.
  3. Maintain personal and professional development, attending mandatory study sessions.
  4. Undergo and actively participate in performance appraisals.
  5. Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional conduct, maintaining competent levels.
  6. Contribute to service improvement and quality improvement.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • Degree in Nursing or Health related field
  • Post‑registration teaching & assessing qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Counselling certificate/diploma
  • Advanced communication skills training
  • Psychological skills training

Experience

  • Post‑registration experience in cancer care or oncology services
  • Presentation and teaching experience
  • Previous experience working with people with lung cancer
  • Participation in service development and implementation of change

Skills

  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Evidence of writing protocols/standards
  • Able to analyse data and provide written reports
  • Evidence of effective team working across professional and organisational boundaries

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues, and policy relating to specialist area
