About the Role

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is taking on the new role of Regional Energy Strategic Planner. You will lead technical engagement and coordinate data interfaces to develop the South East England Regional Energy Strategic Plan (RESP). The role involves working closely with local government, gas and electricity networks, and other stakeholders to understand their energy systems and secure investment. You will also shape methodology, validate data, and present findings to a broad audience. The position is open to full‑time and part‑time applicants and allows hybrid working in Wokingham.

Key Accountabilities

  • Own regional energy system planning inputs and interface them with local and national data.
  • Develop, consult and implement RESP methodology, including geospatial validation.
  • Coordinate work within a matrix structure alongside other regional and South East RESP teams.
  • Represent NESO’s planning function to energy system planners, local government, and industry actors.
  • Engage stakeholders to gain insights, communicate assumptions, and propose changes where necessary.
  • Create geospatial visualisations to support regional insights and inform stakeholders.
  • Develop innovative analytical methods to solve emerging problems.

About You – Key Skills & Experience

  • Technical experience in the energy sector and familiarity with energy scenarios.
  • Understanding of the whole‑energy system, with experience in at least one energy vector (e.g., heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, transport decarbonisation, storage/flex).
  • Experience working with or within energy distribution/transmission companies relevant to the South East.
  • Experience with geospatial data modelling and data‑management procedures.
  • Skill in applying assumptions, validating data and translating technical details into clear, non‑technical communication.
  • Stakeholder engagement experience at multiple levels.
  • Project‑management, coordination and planning skills to meet deadlines.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new areas.
  • Capacity to train and develop other team members.
