School Attendance Service Officer – North West London

Pay Rates: £23.81 – £31.35 per hour Umbrella Rate

Job Overview

We are seeking a committed and experienced School Attendance Service Officer to lead on Elective Home Education (EHE) and Child Employment responsibilities within a busy and dynamic service. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional with strong safeguarding knowledge and experience of working with children, families, schools and multi‑agency partners. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring children receive a suitable education, are safeguarded effectively, and that all child employment and performance legislation is adhered to.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on Elective Home Education casework and provide advice and guidance to schools, families and professionals.
  • Work collaboratively with schools, admissions, inclusion services, early help, social care and Children Missing Education teams where there are concerns regarding a child’s education or welfare.
  • Investigate breaches under the Education Act 1996 and take enforcement action where appropriate, including issuing Penalty Notices and progressing legal proceedings.
  • Serve notices under Section 437 and School Attendance Orders where children are not receiving a suitable education.
  • Prepare prosecution case files, witness statements and present evidence at court, tribunals and legal hearings.
  • Monitor compliance with court recommendations and statutory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and provide reports, data and responses to Freedom of Information requests.
  • Support children with SEND, including liaison regarding Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and annual reviews.
  • Lead on all aspects of child employment and child performance licensing.
  • Provide professional advice and guidance to employers, production companies, schools, parents and partner agencies.
  • Issue child performance licences, work permits and Body of Persons approvals in line with legislation and policy.
  • Conduct visits to performance venues and workplaces to ensure compliance with licence conditions and safeguarding standards.
  • Manage applications and approvals for licensed chaperones.
  • Investigate breaches of child employment legislation and support legal proceedings where necessary.
  • Deliver training and support to schools and professionals on child employment legislation and procedures.

Essential Requirements

  • A degree or relevant qualification with experience in education, early help, school attendance or social care.
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding legislation and practice.
  • In‑depth understanding of Elective Home Education and Child Employment legislation.
  • Experience managing complex caseloads and working in fast‑paced environments.
  • Excellent communication, investigative and case management skills.
  • The ability to engage effectively with children, families and professionals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience preparing reports, maintaining accurate records and presenting information confidently in meetings or court settings.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.Right to Work in the UK.
  • Current Enhanced DBS on the update service.
  • Full UK driving licence would be beneficial.
  • Willingness to undertake travel as part of the role.
