The South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) is looking for ambitious and technically minded individuals to join our Targeted Equipment Interference (TEI) and Technical Development Unit as Technical Deployment Specialists.

This is a rare opportunity to work at the forefront of operational policing technology, developing and deploying specialist capabilities that directly support investigations into some of the most serious criminal threats facing the UK.

About SWROCU

SWROCU brings together officers and police staff from across the five South West police forces as part of the national network of Regional Organised Crime Units across England and Wales.

We work collaboratively to pursue offenders, protect vulnerable people, prevent organised criminality and support investigations involving:

  • Cyber crime
  • Economic crime
  • Drug networks
  • Modern slavery and human trafficking
  • Child sexual abuse and exploitation
  • Serious organised criminality

Our teams combine investigative expertise with specialist technical capabilities to target offenders who pose the greatest risk to our communities.

The Role

As a Technical Deployment Specialist, you will work alongside highly skilled officers, technical specialists and national partners to research, develop, test and deploy innovative technical solutions in support of covert operational activity.

This is not a standard IT role.

You will be solving real-world operational challenges using emerging technologies, creative thinking and advanced technical capability. The role requires curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to continuously learn and develop.

You will contribute to projects involving specialist equipment, technical deployments and advanced investigative techniques, helping law enforcement stay ahead of rapidly evolving criminal technology.

No two days are the same and the work you do will have a direct operational impact.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your work may include:

  • Researching and developing new technical capabilities
  • Testing and deploying specialist operational technology
  • Supporting covert technical operations across the South West region
  • Collaborating with regional and national law enforcement partners
  • Analysing systems, networks and emerging technologies
  • Developing innovative solutions to complex operational challenges
  • Working within secure and highly sensitive environments

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for people with strong technical aptitude, problem-solving ability and a genuine interest in technology and innovation.

You should have knowledge or experience in at least two of the following areas:

  • Web technologies and cloud environments
  • Windows, Linux or macOS system administration
  • Network or database administration
  • Computer or mobile device forensics
  • Network traffic and packet analysis
  • RF technologies
  • Software or firmware development
  • Reverse engineering
  • Distributed applications
  • Code review

Experience or interest in programming languages such as Python, C, C++, JavaScript, SQL, PowerShell or similar would be highly beneficial.

  • Technical research and development

Relevant degree-level qualifications or equivalent practical experience are advantageous but not essential.

Additional Information

  • Full-time permanent role
  • Based at either:
    • SWROCU Northern Hub, Bristol
    • Poole Police Station
  • Travel across the South West region and wider UK may occasionally be required
  • A full UK driving licence is essential

This role requires Management Vetting (MV) and Security Clearance (SC).
