Overview
Internal Audit Manager – Permanent (Darlington, Hybrid or home based). Lead the delivery of audit activities across portfolios, driving quality, outcomes and stakeholder engagement.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the successful delivery of Internal Audit activity across assigned portfolios, ensuring work is prioritised, coordinated and concluded to a consistently high standard.
- Apply professional judgement to translate audit work into clear, credible, decision‑useful insight and stand behind conclusions that are well‑evidenced and proportionate to risk.
- Engage closely with senior leaders, trustees and governance forums, providing independent insight and constructive challenge on risk, control and governance matters.
- Identify themes, root causes and cross‑portfolio insights that strengthen organisational understanding and support better decision‑making.
- Oversee multiple audit engagements, setting direction, maintaining quality and pace, and personally lead complex, high‑risk or sensitive work where additional judgement is required.
- Lead stakeholder engagement, building trusted relationships across senior audiences while maintaining independence and objectivity.
- Contribute to the evolution of the function, using delivery and stakeholder feedback to enhance methodology, improve quality and support a modern, insight‑led Internal Audit approach.
- Optionally develop a depth area such as audit quality, technology, data or AI‑enabled assurance to complement core delivery accountability.
Qualifications
- Experienced Internal Audit professional with a strong track record of owning delivery outcomes at portfolio level.
- Confident operating with senior leaders and decision‑makers, including within governance or trustee environments.
- Pragmatic and proportionate approach to assurance, capable of working through ambiguity and removing obstacles.
- Strong coaching mindset, supporting the development of others through guidance, feedback and encouragement without relying on formal authority.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, using insight from delivery, quality reviews and stakeholder feedback to raise standards and enhance impact.
- Excellent reporting capability, able to distil complex audit findings into clear, insightful and well‑articulated conclusions.
