An opportunity has arisen for a part‑time Band 6 Glaucoma Nurse Specialist within St. Paul’s Ophthalmic Outpatients. The post is part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the assessment, monitoring and treatment of patients with glaucoma. The role involves seeing glaucoma patients within the outpatient department in nurse‑led clinics and acting as a point of contact for existing and newly diagnosed patients. The post holder will contribute to research, audit and practice development, perform specialist assessment of patients’ nursing needs, and plan, implement and evaluate care delivery using advanced clinical knowledge and skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead clinical care by managing a patient caseload and providing expert assessment, planning and evaluation.
- Co‑ordinate and manage nurse‑/AHP‑led clinics within the specialty.
- Contribute to a multi‑professional approach to patient management, especially regarding ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, carers and relatives.
- Support patients and their families, ensuring they receive the information needed to self‑manage, lead or participate in their care delivery.
- Recognise changes in patient condition that require intervention of others and refer appropriately.
- Support, assist and encourage the multidisciplinary team in resolving patient problems through innovative case‑management models.
- Lead the specialist nursing contribution to the service, working in partnership with lead clinicians, general managers and the matron to ensure high standards of patient care.
- Collaborate with the matron to promote the development of nurses/AHPs undertaking the CNO “Ten Key Roles” as appropriate (e.g. prescribing). Act as the clinical expert and professional resource for the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers.
- Develop the specialist area of practice in partnership with other team members, working collaboratively to improve services and quality of care delivered.
- Carry responsibility for a defined caseload or for providing highly specialist service advice, including setting standards of care, assessing care needs, and developing, implementing and evaluating programmes of care, management and education.
- Contribute to achieving the objectives of the clinical service group/specialty corporate objectives and work within the clinical governance framework.
- Access vulnerable people during normal duties; comply with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) and submit for Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse, Midwife or AHP.
- Post‑basic specialist qualification relevant to the specialty.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- At least 2 years’ experience working within an ophthalmic setting.
- Relevant Ophthalmic Nurse Specialist qualification.
- ANEX 21 (training post) may be considered to gain the required competencies (75 % of Band 6 salary paid until completion of competencies).
- Appropriate UK professional registration.
