Band 5 – Staff Nurse, Medicine Division

West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated Band 5 Staff Nurse for its Medicine Division.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide individualised, evidence‑based nursing care to patients across a variety of specialties including General Medicine, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and more.
  • Monitor and assess patients, ensuring holistic physical, social and psychological needs are met.
  • Document care on Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and maintain accurate records.
  • Support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, infection control and resource management.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for patients and their families, keeping them fully informed of treatment, progress and discharge plans.
  • Manage a group of patients and, when appropriate, take charge of ward or department during senior staff absence.
  • Report accidents, hazards, incidents and complaints in line with Trust policies and assist in investigations.
  • Participate in and promote Trust strategies such as the Essence of Care framework, local Nursing and Midwifery strategies and the NHS Patient Involvement & Experience Strategy.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date NMC registration and complete all statutory and mandatory training.
  • Engage in professional development activities and support the development of junior colleagues and students.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration.
  • Diploma/Degree in Nursing

Knowledge

  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of clinical nursing, the NMC Code of Conduct, NHS policies, CQC standards and local protocols.
  • Awareness of acute healthcare developments and evidence‑based practice.

Experience

  • Understanding of acute healthcare settings.
  • Experience within an NHS setting.

Skills and Ability

  • Deliver high‑standard patient care across a wide variety of patients.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adherence to Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.
  • Ability to work under pressure.

Salary: £33,677 to £40,996 per year, pro rata including HCA.
