Epilepsy Specialist Nurse – Band 7

Main duties
- Act as a key worker and provide expert specialist advice and knowledge to patients, carers, and staff regarding epilepsy.
- Accountable for the planning and delivery of all aspects of patient care within the specialist area of practice.
- Participate in epilepsy care for adults, children, and young people.
- Proactively manage own workload and clinical caseload, making decisions regarding care, treatment and support required.
- Co‑ordinate the delivery of the epilepsy patient pathway service in conjunction with the Lead Epilepsy Consultant and senior management, using evidence‑based practice in line with national safety and monitoring standards.
- Lead specialist nurse‑led clinics – optimise complex treatment regimes, facilitate hospital discharge and prevent avoidable admissions.
Managerial duties
- Attend a range of meetings relevant to epilepsy care and represent STSFT when required.
- Participate in service meetings, neurology clinical governance and board‑level discussions.
- Contribute to MDT meetings, ensuring patients are reviewed and treatment options discussed.
Audit, Research and Governance
- Participate in audit, research and governance activities relevant to epilepsy and the wider neurology service.
- Continuously improve clinical care standards in line with STSFT clinical governance framework.
Qualifications
- Degree in nursing studies or a relevant clinical degree (UK equivalent).
- Post‑graduate level study or equivalent specialist experience.
- Mentorship certificate, practice assessor training or equivalent experience.
- Clinical skills accreditation.
- Non‑medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
- Leadership and management training.
- Basic knowledge of financial management.
Experience
- Extensive post‑registration experience; some at senior level within the specialist area.
- Experience of care delivery.
- Experience of leading a team.
- Evidence of leading innovation, change management and practice development.
- Experience coordinating care for a caseload of patients.
- Budget and resource management.
- Participation in recruitment and selection.
- Project management.
- Research and evidence‑based practice implementation.
- Implementing quality frameworks.
Skills and Knowledge
- Advanced specialist knowledge and skills within the area of practice.
- Effective presentation and report writing.
- Understanding of contemporary nursing issues.

- Venepuncture, cannulation and IV drug administration.

Physical Skills
- Assist patients to move as per the Trust Moving and Handling policy.
- Carry teaching equipment when required.
- Manual dexterity and up‑to‑date knowledge of equipment such as syringe drivers and infusion pumps.
