Staff Nurse Band 5 – Ward 2 – Gynaecology

Are you a dynamic innovative newly qualified or experienced band 5 staff nurse looking for a new challenge? There is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our team on Ward 2, University Hospital, Birmingham.
Do you have the passion to deliver excellent care and drive for self-development? We are seeking a passionate, dynamic and forward‑thinking Registered Nurse who wishes to develop their skills and deliver high quality, patient‑centred care on our busy gynaecology ward.
The successful candidate will have an interest in women’s health and want to make a difference to patient care.
Applicants will need to be able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the team and the service. You must be a Registered Nurse (Level 1) or due to enter the register in the next three months.
There are 3 posts available: one full‑time permanent, one part‑time (34.5 hours) permanent, and one full‑time, 12‑month fixed term.
Main duties of the job
Support individuals with all aspects of care including activities of daily living, providing person‑centred care and promoting health and independence.
Perform and record clinical observations including blood pressure, temperature, respirations, and pulse.
Providing emotional support to patients and relatives.
Undertake clinical tasks including wound care, administration of medication, catheterisation, blood glucose monitoring and many other clinical interventions.
Accurately record nutritional and fluid intake.
Liaise daily with the multi‑disciplinary team.
Ensure the privacy, dignity and safety of individuals is maintained at all times.
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications
- Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register (Adult / Child / Learning Disability or Mental Health)
- Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses or post‑graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post‑registration experience
Experience
- Previous or recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
- Willingness to become a practice supervisor or assessor and meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment
- Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct and the proficiencies and standards for registered nurses, and ability to apply this to undergraduate training or post‑graduate practice
- Being an accountable professional

- Providing and evaluating care
- Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams – including prioritisation and delegation skills
- Coordinating care and responding to deteriorating health
- Improving safety and quality of care
- Awareness of current relevant clinical and professional issues and NHS policy
- Understanding and experience of the principles of Safeguarding and Mental Capacity
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues
- Experience in working in an acute NHS practice setting as an undergraduate student nurse or post‑graduate registered nurse
Additional Criteria
- Demonstrable communication and relationship management skills including listening, writing, reading and speaking in English with an understanding of contemporaneous record keeping
- Good IT skills and ability to record information electronically
- Competent in a range of clinical skills and nursing procedures and willingness to undertake expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice
- Competent in managing the care of a group of patients and shift management – taking charge of the practice setting in the absence of more senior staff relevant to the practice setting

- Ability to work a varied shift pattern including nights and weekends, unsocial hours where required
