About the Role

Milk Education are working in partnership with a specialist SEMH provision to recruit a dedicated SEMH Learning Support Assistant. This is a rewarding opportunity to support children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs in a highly supportive and structured environment.

You will play a key role in helping pupils re‑engage with education, build trusting relationships, and develop the emotional regulation and life skills needed to succeed both in school and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
  • Support pupils in managing behaviour, emotions, and transitions throughout the school day
  • Implement and follow individual behaviour support plans and strategies
  • Build positive, consistent, and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Support teaching staff in delivering engaging and accessible learning activities
  • Promote a calm, safe, and structured learning environment
  • Record and report on pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
  • Strong behaviour management skills and a calm, resilient approach
  • Ability to build rapport with pupils who may have experienced barriers to education
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • A proactive, patient, and empathetic attitude
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within a PRU, SEMH school, or alternative provision setting
  • Knowledge of de‑escalation techniques and trauma‑informed approaches
  • Relevant qualifications in education, psychology, youth work, or childcare
