Who are we?

Budwood, a part of Polaris Community, is a local business providing Residential Care and Support to children and young people with emotional/behavioural difficulties and social and emotional mental health needs. Many of our young people have experienced adverse childhood experiences, so the aim of our service is to provide a stable, comfortable home with high levels of support and guidance to keep them safe and to help them learn new skills for a successful transition to independence and adulthood.

Key Information

Full‑time, permanent. Salary: Unqualified £33,349.58–35,935.36 with sleep‑in shifts. Qualified Level 3/4 up to £35,935.36 with sleep‑in shifts.

Location: Southampton.

Hours: Shift pattern on rotation – 3‑week rolling rota of 7 × 24‑hour shifts (09:00‑09:30 the following day) including sleep‑ins and 1 weekend off every 3 weeks.

Main Duties and Requirements

  • Experience of working with children and young people and understanding of the issues that face those in care.
  • Ability to work a 3‑week rolling rota comprising 7 × 24‑hour shifts, with sleep‑in shifts and 1 weekend off every 3 weeks.
  • Promoting, safeguarding and protecting the welfare of our young people.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive, trusting relationships with the young people.
  • Working well as part of a team, being able to accept direction and guidance.
  • Encouraging the development of individual interests of the young people.
  • Hold Residential Childcare/Families Practitioner Diploma, Children and Young People’s Workforce, NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care, or equivalent – or be willing to work towards the required qualification and upgrade to a Level 4 diploma.
  • Have a full UK driving licence and own a car, as the role involves travelling.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Willingness to learn and to undertake a DBS check at enhanced level; DBS will be paid for by us.
  • Experience with Emotional Behavioural Disorder, Social/Residential Work or Youth Work is advantageous.
