Royal Voluntary Service has an opportunity available for a Retail Customer Assistant at Nineteen38 Coffee, located at the Wimbledon Station, The Broadway, Wimbledon, London SW19 7NL. This is a part‑time, permanent position with a competitive hourly rate of £12.71 (equivalent to £23,136 per annum on a full‑time basis).
About the Retail Customer Assistant role
Nineteen38 Coffee™ powered by Royal Voluntary Service is part of the community fabric, providing a menu of beverages and healthy food choices. As a customer assistant you will work alongside a friendly team of employees and volunteers to run the busy café at Wimbledon Train Station.
In this role, you will be responsible for
- Providing friendly, helpful and efficient service at all times
- Welcoming customers, informing them about specials or new products, answering questions and accepting orders and payments
- Operating the till and cashing up
- Maintaining a high level of cleanliness and meeting Health and Safety and food hygiene standards, keeping all areas tidy
- Ensuring that stock and displays are replenished regularly and ordering supplies when required
Hours
You will work 15 hours per week on a flexible rota. Shifts are predominantly Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work on a rota basis. Typical shift times may include 06:30–11:30, 11:30–16:30, and 15:00–20:00, depending on business needs. Paid overtime may be available during busy periods or to cover absences.

Job Requirements
- Previous experience in a barista/café environment is an advantage
- Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast‑paced environment
- Exemplary customer service skills
- Knowledge of EPOS systems
- Knowledge of Food Safety, Health & Safety procedures
- Excellent communication skills
- Enjoy working within a passionate team and independently when required
- Organised, delegating, and prioritising skills
- Flexibility to meet business needs, including attending out‑of‑hours training if required
- Experience with general administrative processes, email, and internet
Job Responsibilities
To ensure the effective operation of the retail outlet and maintain outstanding store standards while providing friendly, helpful and excellent customer service.
- Preparing hot and cold drinks
- Serving and preparing freshly made food such as baguettes, cakes, sandwiches, and pastries
- Welcoming customers and informing them about specials or new products, answering questions and accepting orders and payments
- Operating the till and undertaking cash reconciliation as required
- Receiving and distributing deliveries, maintaining and rotating stock appropriately, and assisting with regular stock checks
- Engaging with volunteers to lead by example and ensure a great volunteer experience
- Maintaining a high level of cleanliness, complying with Health and Safety and food hygiene standards, and keeping all areas tidy
- May involve physically moving loaded trolleys of stock over short distances
