Personal Assistant / Support Worker (P/T)
Hours: 2–12 hrs per week – variable.
Days / Hours: Variable – between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday (earliest start 8am, latest finish 6pm). Flexible to be discussed at interview.
Rate: £13.45 per hour.
Duties
Provide support and companionship to a teenage boy who lives with Autism and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) in the Stewarton area. Confidentiality is essential.
The support will gradually build up to foster a relationship, trust, and increased participation in social activities. Initially within the family home, the support should grow towards community engagement, encouraging attendance at activities such as cinema, fitness and swimming, and arrangements for animal‑assisted therapy at a local farm.
Personal care support must encourage the young man in routine hygiene and continence tasks without direct commands, ensuring a calm, encouraging environment.
Social Support
Facilitate initial in‑home support with the goal of moving towards local community attendance, providing encouragement and companionship for activities such as cinema and swimming.
Personal Care
Support with hygiene and continence. The assistant should recognize when these tasks are necessary and motivate the client without telling him directly what to do.
Qualities
- Young at heart, friendly, fun, and easygoing.
- Calm and supportive, capable of encouraging in a positive manner.
- Good communication skills, able to speak at the client’s level.
- Aware that direct commands may trigger fight/flight/freeze reactions.
Experience Required
- Experience supporting young adults with Autism / PDA and related anxiety – essential.
- Must have a driver’s licence, own car, business insurance, and be willing to drive for work purposes.
- Will be required to undergo a new or updated PVG Disclosure and provide two reference contacts prior to appointment.
- Will undergo relevant training.
- Probationary period: 6 months, 1‑week notice within that time if the post does not work out.
