An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Maternity Support Worker to become a band 3 at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Hospital – Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital, West London.

Main duties of the job
- Working under the direction of a registered midwife, midwife or nursing associate, participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care, within the boundaries of your role which may include chaperoning of patients, escorting/ transferring of patients and providing 1-1 patient centred care or caring for a group of patients that require enhanced care.
- Demonstrates own duties to new starters, undertaking a buddying role for new Health Care Support Workers.
- Frequent exposure to emotional/distressing events, e.g., breaking of bad news by registered health professionals.
- Assist in the care of patients at end of life and after death.
- Orders supplies under the direction of the midwife in charge.
- Participate in patient and public involvement activities.
- Participate in general cleanliness and tidiness of ward environment.
- Undertake mandatory training and role specific training relevant to role.
- Prioritises own workload.
- Record and escape patient physiological observations.
- Acts on own initiative when delivering patient care with supervision accessible

Person specification
Education
- Completed Care Certificate or equivalent experience
- Able to demonstrate literacy, numeracy and communication skills in English to carry out the duties of the role (known as functional skills), or GCSE or equivalent experience
- Bedside Emergency Assessment Course for HCA’s (BEACH) or willingness to undertake
- Further qualifications and training relevant and required by the speciality of this post
- Level 2 or 3 Health Care qualification/apprenticeship, or completion of Band 3 Excellence in Care Competencies for existing Band 2 substantive MSW
Experience
- Experience of working in Acute Hospital setting or care background, in a Band 2 MSW role or equivalent
- Experience of delivering personal care to patients
- Experience of using computers or willing to undertake training in local computer systems
- Experience of taking clinical observations
Skills
- Evidence of using one’s own initiative
- Awareness of risks, identifying them and alerting appropriate personnel
- Knowledge of basic IT systems or willing to undertake training
- Knowledge of care and related procedures and relevant legislation
- Awareness of changing agenda within NHS
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Previous experience of complex health needs
- Competently perform a range if the core skills relevant to the area of speciality
