The Project – Heathrow Airport

Ferrovial Construction has been working at Heathrow Airport for over 10 years, delivering complex airside and landside projects. Recent work includes new taxiways, runway maintenance, and the rehabilitation of critical assets such as fire main, fuel main, and HV ducts. The company is currently engaged in asset rehabilitation and runway resurfacing projects, coordinating closely with Heathrow stakeholders to deliver value for money.

The Role

Reporting to a Senior Project Manager, the Temporary Works Coordinator will ensure the safety, compliance, and seamless execution of all temporary works across the project site.

Responsibilities

  • Has overall responsibility for temporary works coordination for the project or the specific area appointed.
  • Responsible for providing and receiving information from all other temporary works coordinators on the project.
  • Ensures temporary works design is implemented in accordance with construction issue drawings and specifications.
  • Recognises that temporary works coordination overrides other responsibilities.
  • Raises commercial pressures or other unresolvable issues with the Project Manager.
  • Ensures checks confirm temporary works do not adversely affect permanent works.
  • Authorises and can stop work if not carried out satisfactorily.
  • Ensures provision of formal permission to load or progress beyond the hold point.
  • Implements in‑site temporary works procedures and coordinates contractor procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains a main temporary works register compliant with OH&S(UK&IRE)-CF-01-05.
  • Copies contractor temporary works registers to the main register when appropriate.
  • Serves as the point of contact for receiving relevant information from clients, principal designers, permanent works designers, the site team, and any temporary works coordinators.
  • Prepares a design brief in consultation with the project team, using BS5975 guidelines.
  • References other temporary works in the design brief.
  • Includes identified residual risks or loading constraints in the design brief.
  • Issues the design brief to the Temporary Works Designer for satisfactory design approval.
  • Ensures an independent design check is performed.
  • Distributes certified temporary works design to relevant parties (principal designer, permanent works designer).
  • Records drawings, calculations, and other relevant documents.
  • Verifies required client or third‑party approvals have been received.
  • Provides detailed design information to on‑site supervision, covering residual risks and guidance notes.
  • Prepares a method statement for the temporary works.
  • Develops an inspection and test plan, with a quality control checklist, to verify compliance with the certified design.
  • Checks material or construction changes against the original design and takes appropriate action.
  • Conducts inspections and tests at appropriate stages.
  • Notifies the designer of any changes or discrepancies.
  • Prevents loading or unloading until discrepancies are rectified.
  • Issues permit to load or proceed after final satisfactory checks.
  • Issues permits to unload or proceed once permanent structure has reached adequate strength.
  • Implements a safe system of work for dismantling temporary works.
  • Transmits relevant health and safety information to the principal designer.
  • Reviews contractors’ temporary works procedures, accepting or rejecting them.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid CSCS card (Supervisor or higher) and SSSTS or SMSTS certification.
