The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as a motivated and skilled Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Bias) based at the Hillington Industrial Estate laundry facility. The post holder will play a key role in maintaining, repairing, and supporting the safe operation of a wide range of mechanical and engineering systems within a busy industrial healthcare environment. The role also includes supporting the training and development of apprentices and adult trainees, contributing to their learning and assisting managers with planning training programmes. This position includes shift and weekend working and is eligible for a pay enhancement.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

  • Location: Hillington Laundry
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Hours: Full‑time, 36 hours per week
  • Shift pattern: 5 over 7 days including night shift and weekends
  • From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part‑time working hours will be reduced proportionally, and a corresponding increase in hourly rate will apply to keep overall pay unchanged.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment for the provision of clinical care.
  • Use acquired skills and abilities to identify desired actions, expedite best solutions for desired outcomes, and assist in putting solutions into practice.
  • Interpret detailed manufacturer installation manuals and specifications, technical data and wiring diagrams, and schematic drawings for building services, systems, plant and equipment.
  • Complete Planned Preventative Maintenance in accordance with organisational and manufacturer recommendations, using appropriate tools, test equipment and recording details of work carried out, to prevent breakdowns and maintain optimal operational ability.
  • Respond to breakdowns, evaluate situations and take corrective action to ensure minimal disruption and damage.
  • Use BMS (Building Management System) to set parameters and record data on a wide range of building services to provide appropriate environmental conditions throughout the hospital and give early warning of service faults (Medical gas, heating, water, power, etc.).
  • Maintain, repair and commission patient‑related equipment and services such as sterilisers, washer‑disinfectors, operating lights and tables, dental chairs, medical gas plants to ensure a safe environment for staff and patients in these areas.
  • Carry out checks, repairs, tests and maintenance of specialised multi‑faceted hospital equipment such as sterilisers and washer‑disinfectors to the required standards as per Hospital Technical Memorandum.
  • Measure up jobs for new installations and alterations, check plan drawings and on‑site plans, work out best routes to run supplies and services, and advise supervisor of materials required to complete work.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

  • Served a recognised apprenticeship in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or Plumbing. Equivalent to SVQ Level 4, Higher National Diploma, Modern Apprenticeship – Level 4, Professional Development Awards (SCQF 8‑9).
  • Knowledge of procedures for mechanical and gas maintenance and repair of electrical equipment; BTEC/HNC Level plus relevant post‑apprenticeship training or equivalent experience.
  • Attend training courses as required by Estates Management and NHS policies. The post holder must undergo specialised training in systems and equipment to gain in‑depth theoretical knowledge required to comply with numerous laws, national guidelines and standards. Regular re‑certification is required to maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of competency and expertise on revised regulations.
  • Low Voltage SHTM 06‑02 (One‑week training and certification, revalidation every three years) plus BS 7671 IEE wiring regulations.
  • Mandatory first‑aid duties for working with electricity; to the level of competence and training required by safe code of practice.
  • Level 3 C&G 2391 Award in the Inspection, testing and verification of fixed wiring systems.
  • Level 3 Awards in the In‑Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (PAT) G&C 2377 Pt 1 and the Management Requirements for the Maintenance of Electrical Equipment G&C 2377 Pt 2.
