Education and Training – Aspiring Art Therapist – Learning Support Assistant, Maidenhead

An ideal role for a creative graduate looking to build specialist experience in therapeutic support, emotional regulation, and neurodevelopmental needs.

The schools are well connected by public transport, with parking available nearby.

Role context

Are you passionate about using creative, person-centred approaches to support young people with emotional, social, and neurodevelopmental differences such as autism, ADHD, or sensory processing needs?

Are you looking to build frontline experience that will prepare you for a career in Art Therapy, Creative Arts Therapies, Educational Psychology, Occupational Therapy, or Clinical Psychology?

We are recruiting Learning Support Assistants for specialist SEN and mainstream schools in Maidenhead. This role offers hands-on experience supporting children and young people who may struggle with emotional regulation, communication, and engagement.

For an aspiring art therapist, this role provides a unique opportunity to observe how non-verbal expression, creativity, and therapeutic relationships can support emotional well-being and learning.

Many pupils in these settings experience difficulties with emotional regulation, attention, executive functioning, and social communication. Your role will be to provide structure, consistency, and positive support—using creative and therapeutic approaches to help them remain engaged in education and develop confidence in their abilities.

Responsibilities

You will gain direct exposure to:

  • Supporting children with autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, and anxiety
  • Understanding sensory processing differences and co-regulation strategies
  • Applying trauma-informed and person-centred approaches
  • Learning de-escalation and emotional regulation techniques
  • Building trusting relationships with children who may struggle with verbal communication
  • Observing how creative and therapeutic interventions are embedded in educational settings
  • Understanding how emotional well-being impacts learning, attention, and behaviour

You will see first-hand how the right support strategies, routine, and creative engagement can significantly improve a child’s confidence, emotional resilience, and long-term outcomes.

Career Pathways

This role is particularly valuable if you are aiming to move into:

  • Art Therapy or Creative Arts Therapies
  • Educational Psychology
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Autism specialist services
  • Neurodevelopmental assessment or intervention roles

Most importantly, you will help demonstrate the value of inclusion, creativity, and supportive environments in helping young people thrive.
