About the Role

The Support Worker will provide a structured, personalised resettlement service to every service user at Mildmay House. They will support service users who have experienced homelessness to move into their own homes in a planned and supported way.

Tasks include advising, training, information and one‑to‑one or group support during the resettlement process, such as housing rights advice, accompanying meetings, and practical support for move‑in activities (e.g., obtaining furniture, setting up payment plans for household bills).

Responsible for enabling service users to maximise their independence, dignity and choice in accordance with project aims and objectives.

Shift pattern: Full time on a rota basis – typically one week of day shifts, one week of night shifts, and every other weekend.

What you will be doing

  • Providing service users with information on housing options, helping them to make accommodation applications, advocating on their behalf with housing providers, and accompanying them to interviews and viewings when appropriate.
  • Acting as a key worker for a caseload of residents, enabling them to take ownership of their journey with Salvation Army Homes.
  • Ensuring that clients receive the necessary practical help to move in, directly or through liaison with other support services (e.g., housing benefit claims, assistance with community care grants, domestic fuel connections).
  • Conducting strengths‑based assessments and facilitating the co‑production of person‑centred plans that enable individuals to achieve their goals and identify and develop their talents.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with specialists and agencies that can offer resources, funding or services relevant to service user needs (e.g., Registered Social Landlords, Local Authority, Community Psychiatric Services, Benefit Agency).

About the Service

Mildmay House is a 47‑bed supported accommodation service for single homeless males and females aged 16 and older. Clients come from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances, including relationship breakdown, rough sleeping, mental health issues, and drug and alcohol use. Staff aim to support and encourage clients throughout their stay, helping them move towards independent living.

  • Experience of or knowledge related to working with homeless people.
  • Experience of working with clients to overcome barriers to effective resettlement.
  • Proven ability to network with outside agencies and develop partnerships that support effective resettlement.
  • Capacity to deal successfully with difficult and complex situations.
  • Capacity to understand individual action plans, personal development programmes and needs, and risk assessment.
  • Confident and capable communicator, not fazed by difficult situations.
  • Ability to build trusting, professional relationships and high resilience.
  • Take an asset‑based approach to empowering people to develop their skills, strengths and talents.
