Overview
The Municipality of Brockton seeks volunteers and staff to support Fire and Rescue Services and Facilities & Parks operations. This description combines two distinct opportunities: Walkerton Fire Department volunteer/paid-on-call roles and part-time Facilities & Parks Operator positions. Responsibilities and requirements vary by role.
Fire & Rescue – Walkerton Fire Department (Volunteer/Paid-on-Call/Career options)
The Fire and Rescue Service focuses on preventing emergencies and responding to incidents to protect the public. The department emphasizes training, preparedness, public education, and teamwork.
Primary Responsibilities
- Respond to suppression and emergency call-outs in accordance with standard operating procedures. Attendance required at a minimum of 40% of paged calls.
- On-scene duties may include:
- Wearing SCBA during strenuous activity and extreme temperatures
- Lift, carry, and set up equipment on scene
- Maintenance and operation of pumps and hoses
- Operation of hydraulic hand tools
- Climbing ladders
- Moving equipment or persons in crawling/crouched positions
- Structural exterior/entry work with tools
- Use saws for entry/ventilation
- Potential exposure to hazards in search and rescue or firefighting
- Provide first-response medical assistance
- Support on-scene tasks as directed by Captains
- Operate in a team with established chain of command
- Participate in regular training (minimum 80% attendance) and attain certain NFPA certifications.
- Comply with policies, guidelines, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Perform hall duties: wash equipment, ensure readiness, clean/maintain gear, conduct checks/inspections.
- Support Fire Prevention initiatives (smoke alarm education, public events, school visits).
Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills
- High school diploma required; post-secondary in related field is an asset.
- Fire certifications (NFPA 1001 Levels I & II) asset.
- Knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, standards (asset).
- Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Tact, discretion, and ability to handle confidential matters.
- Valid MTO Class DZ license or willingness to obtain.
- Criminal record check satisfactory.
- Ability to respond quickly to Walkerton Fire Hall for emergencies.
- First Aid/CPR/AED Level C or willingness to obtain.

Facilities & Parks Operator (Part-Time)
The Recreation Master Services and Facility Plan supports a part-time Facilities and Parks Operator to perform maintenance and operational duties for municipal facilities and lands. Ideal candidates are outgoing, self-starters with strong time management.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ice maintenance tasks including resurfacing, edging, depth checks, and related duties per ORFA standards.
- Assist with ice making, painting, and ice removal.
- Refrigeration plant readings and routine maintenance documentation.
- Maintenance of Centennial Park Pool; parkland, fields, trails, and diamonds.
- Operate lawn mowers, tractors, weed trimmers, blowers, chainsaw, and brush chippers.
- Assist with horticultural duties; repair and maintenance of equipment.
- Support turf maintenance and club/event services; provide customer service to facility patrons.
Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills
- OSSD (Grade 12) or equivalent required.
- Willingness to obtain professional development certificates from recognized associations (asset).
- Municipal recreation experience and knowledge of facilities, arenas, pools, parks, fields, trails is an asset.
- Ability to work with limited supervision; superior customer service skills.
- Valid Basic Refrigeration Certificate, Chainsaw Operator, Safe Propane handling, Working at Heights, NSPF Pool/Spa Operator certificates, First Aid/CPR.
- Valid Class G driver’s license.
What We Offer You
- Hourly rate: $25.77 – $30.14 depending on qualifications and experience.
- Seasonal hours: April–October up to 40 hours/week; November–March 24–32 hours/week.
- Variable shifts including mornings, evenings, weekends.
