Summary
As a Gardener for the National Trust, you’ll be a hands‑on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening. Responsible for day‑to‑day maintenance and the highest standards of horticulture, you’ll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate.
This fixed‑term role is a great opportunity to practise and develop your gardening experience and skills with our team, managing an interesting variety of garden areas in the beautiful and tranquil setting of Ightham Mote.
Contract Details
Fixed Term f/t or p/t (37.5 hours per week) to 29 July 2027.
Salary: £27,612 per annum.
Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week. Occasional weekends, bank holidays and evenings may be required.
Responsibilities
Your role will include:
- Daily checks to ensure all areas are safe for visitors.
- Routine tasks such as weeding, pruning, mulching and plant care.
- Operating machinery such as lawnmowers, hedge cutters, leaf blowers, garden vehicles and tractors.
- Propagation, growing and cutting flowers; cultivating fruit and vegetables in the walled garden.
- Preparing plants for sale, carrying out soft and hard landscaping, garden design and restoration work.
- Involved in composting, waste and recycling management, and supporting other teams in property events.
Who We’re Looking For
- Enthusiastic horticulturist and hands‑on gardener with experience in hard landscaping.
- Knowledgeable about plants and keen on detail.
- Experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers.
- Driver with a full UK licence.
- Able to manage a demanding outdoor role.
- Good at communication and interpersonal skills.
- Confident working within a team or independently.
- Able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines.
