Apprentice Surfacing Operative

Department: Early Careers

Employment Type: Permanent – Full Time

Location: Clatchard Quarry, Newburgh

Compensation: £21,258 – £23,317 / year

Description

Are you interested in the built environment? Do you enjoy working outdoors? Are you often curious about how things are made and why things work?

If so, perhaps working as a surfacing operative is your career call. Earn as you learn, combining study for an SVQ in Highways Maintenance and Roadbuilding Maintenance (Construction) in Scotland, with industry experience at the largest independent construction materials group in the UK.

Breedon is a home for inquisitive learners. Quarries, cement, and construction are no longer old-fashioned sectors. We’re providing the foundation for our lives, building the places where we live and work, play and in-between.

Interested in…?

  • Being paid to study; earn as you learn, without having to ‘work the time back’.
  • SVQ in highways maintenance and road building.
  • Full company funding of any fees for qualifications and training.
  • No need to buy your own kit or any work equipment; it’s all on us.
  • A competitive salary significantly higher than the national minimum wage for apprentices.
  • Support from a community of apprentices; a collaborative and comprehensive induction.
  • A huge variety of potential career progression pathways at a stable, thriving business.

As an Apprentice Surfacing Operative, you’ll support the vital need to be involved in the surfacing, resurfacing and improvement of vast stretches of roads and the highway network. You will help with the removal of old roads and surfaces, preparing for the new surface, complete inspections, and testing of the new surfaces. You will learn how to operate a wide range of specialist plant machinery such as rollers and spreaders. This is a 24/7 operation so flexibility to working hours is key.

There will be 2 weeks of block training, which could be residential, depending on where you live. Breedon will cover the costs of any accommodation, travel and meals.

If you’re one to tiptoe around puddles with trepidation, maybe this role isn’t for you. You won’t be spending every day in a clean, corporate office swivelling on an office chair! If you have a natural affinity with the great outdoors, in all weathers, then now we’re talking.

Do you offer…?

  • National 4 in Maths & English desirable although not essential.
  • Basic IT skills to use work systems e.g. excel, work, etc.
  • Enthusiasm for working in the great outdoors.
  • A full UK Driving Licence – during your apprenticeship with us, we want you to experience and see everything we have to offer so you will need to be flexible to travel to other sites.
  • The desire to get stuck in and work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility with your working hours and be able to work nights and weekends.
  • The ability to work away from home with possible overnight stays.
  • You will need to be a minimum age of 18 (by July 2026).

In joining us, you won’t be thrown in the deep end or treated like just a number; you’ll work in a close-knit team, with someone always on hand to offer help.

Why Breedon…?

Additional benefits for this role include:

  • A competitive salary
  • Pension
  • 25 days annual leave, plus bank holidays on top
  • Share Saver Scheme
  • Life Assurance
  • Access to our employee benefits platform, giving you discounts on a wide variety of high street shops and brands.
  • Broad learning opportunities and career progression pathways.
