Role

Join us as a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO) in Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS). You will play a key role in keeping the justice system safe and secure.

  • Salary: £24,596 per week (35 hours) rising to £25,555 from 1 September 2026.
  • Further clear annual progression: Year 2: £26,191; Year 3: £26,684; Year 4: £27,180.
  • Working hours: 24/6, 35 hours per week. Shifts set on a rota 12 weeks in advance; flexibility required. Part‑time may be considered but only across full working days.

Location: Brighton, BN2 0RF.

Duties

As a PCO you will work as part of a team to deliver safe and secure escorting and custody services and ensure detainee welfare during court proceedings.

  • Escort detainees within the court premises, including to courtrooms, cells, and facilities.
  • Supervise detainees during hearings to maintain safety and security.
  • Manage sensitive situations and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Support detainee welfare, including food, drink, and wellbeing checks.
  • Monitor behaviour and respond to incidents or risks.
  • Conduct searches to maintain a secure environment.
  • Complete accurate records and documentation.
  • Work closely with court staff and partners to ensure smooth operations.

Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence (B or B1) – desirable.
  • Reasonable fitness for the physical demands of the role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure.
  • Confidence in managing behaviour and de‑escalating conflict.
  • Teamwork and ability to follow processes accurately.
  • Professionalism, integrity and respect for confidentiality.

Eligibility Checks

The role is subject to Ministry of Justice Enhanced Level 2 checks, DBS clearance, satisfactory employment references, occupational health checks, and random alcohol and drug testing. The role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. No Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.
