About the Job

Salary: £32,597 to £35,412 per annum.

Contract: Permanent Full-time, 37 hours per week.

Location: Clapham Depot, Worthing. You may be required to travel and work in a hybrid arrangement based on service needs.

We are looking for a motivated and customer‑focused individual to become a Highway Steward.

As a Highway Steward, you will support the delivery of a safe highway network to all residents of West Sussex by regularly inspecting, repairing highways and enforcing highway legislation. The role involves proactive stewardship, responding to highway matters, and providing support to community groups such as Parishes and Neighbourhood groups.

You will be required to travel around the county independently, plan your work efficiently, and use your own initiative in carrying out duties that include physical activities. Flexibility is required; you will be expected to cover other areas across the county or focus on other tasks when necessary to ensure efficient service operation.

Responsibilities

Respond to customer enquiries and resolve issues in a timely manner.

Support and enable community groups to undertake their own work on highways.

Maintain accurate records of faults and findings.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Full current driver’s licence.
  • Basic theoretical knowledge of engineering/civil construction for planning improvements and repairs to the highway, including the Highways Act, NRSWA, and other relevant legislation.
  • Sound and accurate IT knowledge.
  • Demonstrable customer service and community engagement skills.
  • Proven successful experience working as part of a team to meet objectives within agreed timescales.

  • Ability to anticipate and identify problems, plan solutions, make pragmatic decisions and utilise available resources effectively.
  • Strong customer focus and teamwork to deliver a high‑quality highways network.
  • Good professional observational skills to locate faults and keep accurate documentation.
