Working Pattern

The role

As a Technical Services Field Technician, you will join a specialist team supporting the delivery, maintenance, refurbishment and commissioning of Protection, Control and SCADA systems across SSEN Distribution’s network. This is a hands‑on technical role focused on substation secondary systems, including protection and control panels, RTU/SCADA equipment and associated auxiliary systems within primary and grid substations. You will support both capital delivery and operational fault response activities, helping ensure the safe and reliable operation of the network.

Working closely with Protection and SCADA Engineers, you will undertake installation, modification, testing, fault‑finding and commissioning support activities across a range of complex secondary systems. The role combines practical field installation responsibilities with opportunities to develop broader technical capability in protection, control and SCADA systems.

Due to the operational nature of the network, the role will involve travel across the licence area, occasional working away from base location and participation in operational support activities where required.

You will

  • Carry out installation and modification works on Protection, Control and SCADA systems within substations, including panel wiring, multicore installation, glanding, terminating, panel alterations and associated secondary system works.
  • Support testing, commissioning and fault‑finding activities on protection and control systems under the guidance of Protection and SCADA Engineers, including wiring verification, signal checks and functional testing.
  • Assist with refurbishment, maintenance and upgrade activities on protection relays, RTU/SCADA equipment, control systems and associated substation auxiliary systems.
  • Read and interpret schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams and cable schedules to safely deliver work on live LV AC and DC systems in accordance with approved procedures and standards.
  • Work closely with engineers, project teams, contractors and operational staff to support project delivery, commissioning activities and operational fault response across the network.

You have

  • A recognised electrical qualification (e.g. ONC / NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds) or equivalent relevant experience in electrical installation, panel wiring or control systems.
  • Strong practical experience in electrical installation and panel wiring, ideally within substation, industrial, protection, control, SCADA or automation environments.
  • Experience working on Protection, Control and/or SCADA systems, including installation, modification, testing, commissioning support or fault‑finding activities, along with a good understanding of secondary wiring and control circuits.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams and cable schedules, with experience working safely on live LV AC and DC systems in line with approved procedures.
  • A full UK driving licence, with willingness to travel across the network area and work within operational environments. Experience within substations, utility environments, operational authorisation frameworks, or familiarity with RTU/SCADA systems and protection relays would be advantageous.
