Ophthalmic Imaging Technician

Band 4: £28,392 – £31,157 per annum pro rata if part time
Contract: Fixed term until 24 May 2027
Hours: 37.5 per week; all MKUH roles considered for flexible working.
We are looking to recruit a part‑time enthusiastic Ophthalmic Imaging Technician to cover a maternity leave post. The candidate will have excellent communication skills and provide clinical testing of visual fields, ophthalmic photography, and Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT). Previous experience in diagnostic Optometry / Ophthalmology work is essential. This role is suitable for a hospital‑based Ophthalmic Technician or a community‑based Optical Assistant interested in gaining extended clinical skills.

Main duties
- Carry out Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans.
- Perform anterior segment imaging and fundus photography with the Optos wide‑field camera.
- Undertake visual fields assessment using the Humphrey Visual Fields Analyzer.
- Test and record vision using sight test chart – Snellen and LogMAR.
- Manage administrative and clerical duties as required.
- Handle working problems in the absence of the Lead Ophthalmic Technician, e.g., canceling clinics due to staff sickness or other unforeseen absences.
- Liaise with IT and EBME regarding equipment problems and technical updates.
- Coordinate with external equipment providers for technical issues or training updates.
- Gather information for audits and present findings at the annual Optometry Department Audit.
- Support other Ophthalmic Imaging Technician colleagues with personal development.
Qualifications and knowledge
- Good standard of general education including Maths and English GCSE at grade level A–C (or equivalent).
- Knowledge equivalent to relevant NVQ Level 3 training, plus previous experience in the Ophthalmic Imaging role.
Experience
- Experience working as part of a team.
- Experience using Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging.
- Experience using an automated system to test visual fields.
- Experience of anterior segment and retinal photography.
- Experience testing visual acuity with Snellen and LogMAR methods.
- Experience testing colour vision.
Skills
- Good practical skills.
- Good organisation, time‑management and planning skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven ability to learn new skills and practice them competently.
- Knowledge of Microsoft applications.
- Knowledge of Electronic Patient Record, Electronic Document Management, and other hospital‑related IT systems.
